Deposits from Antarctic glacial ice thought to be 8.1 million years old have been re-dated at not more than 310,000 years old, and maybe as little as 43,000, reports a team writing in the Feb. issue of Geology.1 Ng (MIT), Hallet, Sletten and Stone (U. of Washington) analyzed cosmogenic helium-3 and calculated the rate of sublimation of the ice to arrive at the new age estimate for glacial till (leftover rock debris from glacial melt or ice evaporation). “Such rapid recent growth of the till contradicts previous interpretations that it is older than 8.1 Ma at an adjacent site, where it encloses volcanic ash of this age,” they say (emphasis added in all quotes). “We question whether the ash provides a valid age constraint for the ice.” Earlier geologists had dated the ash fall as a time constraint on the glacial till, but this team says it may accumulate much more rapidly than assumed. “Our results show that the ash may not be a reliable stratigraphic indicator.”1Ng et al., “Fast-growing till over ancient ice in Beacon Valley, Antarctica,” Geology, Vol. 33, No. 2, pp. 121�124, doi: 10.1130/G21064.1.This team may not have the last word, either. Readers should learn from this story that even among secular geologists, interpretations can contradict one another by orders of magnitude. Their paper begins, “The recent history of East Antarctica is key to understanding the response of large ice sheets to climate forcing.” Beware political decisions based on advice from geologists who read present data and weave stories about things that happened millions of years ago, as if it will help forecast future events. Connecting with people, finding places liked by friends and tracking personal travel habits over time were listed as the primary reasons people who use location based social networks like Facebook Places, Foursquare and Google Latitude do so in a survey published by Portland, Oregon digital marketing firm White Horse. The firm surveyed 437 smartphone owners and found that discounts and gaming were not seen as significant motivators for the use of location services. All of this has to be taken with a grain of salt, of course, because it’s a firm that does web design and marketing as a service. That 39% of respondents surveyed said they knew about and used location based services seems to me a high number, reason to be optimistic, not as the survey’s title says any indication that the sector is broken. None the less (see my disclosure below), the data is quite interesting and the recommendations are thought provoking and well articulated.Included in those recommendations are the following:Companies interested in reaching potential consumers using location based services should build their own, rather than emphasize participation in existing services, because existing services add too little to the core social networking features they duplicate from Facebook, Twitter or the good old fashioned telephone.Companies should seek to fullfil new social functions with location apps, not just communication. That’s already covered. “Marketers will need to posit experiences & goals that make sense for their particular brands to endorse, build appropriate interactions, and test rewards and incentives,” the report says.Build a social media presence first. “…success will depend on engaging those customers who are most active in social media, based on an understanding of their ‘native’ social experiences in existing communities, whether physical or digital. FORT ST JOHN, B.C. – B.C. Emergency Health Services announced today that eight new paramedic positions and two new ambulances will be coming to Fort St John and Dawson Creek later this year. Currently, both communities have been staffed by a mixture of full-time and on-call paramedics. BCEHS says the addition of eight new paramedics will allow for a more stable staffing model in Northeastern BC. “This investment will help improve access to care for people living in the Peace Region,” said Health Minister Adrian Dix. “These additional ambulances and full-time positions will help strengthen health-care services the community counts on, and make sure paramedics are there when people need them.”In addition to the eight full-time positions, the two new ambulances will help make sure resources are available to respond to medical 9-1-1 emergencies and will be available to assist with scheduled hospital transfers. The new ambulances will also be able to assist the nearby communities of Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge and Hudson’s Hope when needed.

Credit: Courtesy of OSU AthleticsAs the Ohio State rowing team looks ahead to going after an unprecedented fourth straight national championship in 2016, the squad is working hard to prepare itself and stay focused on the season ahead.“It’s kind of an indescribable feeling because at the end, you all realize how much work you all put in for this moment,” junior MaryClare Stannard said.The team captured its third consecutive championship last year, becoming the first in NCAA history to do so.“When we won, I was just so happy for everyone in the boat and on the the team,” junior Casey Schaffer said.There is a lot of buzz surrounding the team and the possibility of repeating yet again, and everyone involved in the program knows it.“We try to stay humble, and we gotta make sure there’s no cutting corners,” Stannard said.Assistant coaches Madeline Davis and Anna Goodale take a similar viewpoint in focusing on the now.“I tell them ‘one stroke at a time,’ because you will not get better if you skip over and not pay attention to what’s right in front of you,” Goodale said.Davis added that the team’s main focus has to be improving, even after reaching the pinnacle three years in a row.“At every opportunity you have to take a step forward, take it,” Davis said.Both Davis and Goodale have professional experience in rowing, having competed on the U.S. women’s national team.Goodale, the newest addition to the coaching staff, was a member of the women’s eight team that won a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.The women’s eight team, which is a team in rowing that has eight members in the boat, with four oars on either side for propulsion and a rudder manned by a coxswain, is the group which took home the individual championship for OSU.The team works hard to keep focused through a culture of camaraderie.“We are honestly a family,” Schaffer said. “I’ve never been a part of such an empowering group of young female athletes.”Stannard agreed that it is a very close-knit group.“We feed off of each other as teammates,” Stannard said. “We can’t do it without each other.”The 2016 schedule has yet to be released, but the season is set to begin in late March.

But for the Buckeyes, the going is only getting more tough, as they are set to travel to Ann Arbor, Michigan, to take on archrival Michigan (9-2, 6-1) on Saturday. Under the direction of first-year coach Jim Harbaugh, the Wolverines have solidified their place back in the discussion as an elite program. After finishing just 5-7 a year ago, Harbaugh has changed the culture and turned the Wolverines into one of biggest surprises in college football this season. Here is a look at Harbaugh’s squad.Hot Peppers Coming out of high school, Jabrill Peppers was one of the most sought-after recruits in the country. Peppers, a consensus top-five player, eventually chose to take his many talents to Ann Arbor, but his freshman season was cut short after being injured in September. He appeared in just three games, which allowed him to pick up a medical redshirt. Now, the New Jersey native is healthy and showing why college coaches around the nation did everything in their power to get him on their teams. Although he is technically going to start at safety, that is just a label. It doesn’t restrict him.On defense, he will play nearly everything except defensive lineman. In a base package, he plays as the strong safety, but the former state champion in the 100-meter dash will become a cornerback in the nickel. When defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin sends out the dime package in passing situations, Peppers often will slide over and play linebacker to have extra speed on the field. He’s fourth on the team with 40 total tackles, 5.5 of which have been for a loss, and second in pass breakups with 10. When Michigan’s defense gets a stop on third down — which is often, evidenced by the team ranking second in the country in third-down percentage (.232) — Peppers doesn’t leave the field. Instead, he drops back to return punts. On the season, he is averaging 11.4 yards per return, with a long of 41. Now, increasingly more often, Peppers won’t leave the field after he handles his return duties. To take further advantage of his skillset, Harbaugh has begun to play the redshirt freshman on offense, like Charles Woodson did for the Wolverines during his tenure. Peppers has gotten handoffs out of the backfield and taken direct snaps out of the wildcat while also splitting out wide to catch passes. He doesn’t always touch the ball when he lines up on offense, but the possibility of him getting it requires defenses to know where No. 5 is at all times. In total, the 6-foot-1, 205-pound Peppers has 17 offensive touches for 97 yards and two scores. His offensive snaps have increased as the season has progressed, so expect Harbaugh to use him often against the Buckeyes. Incredibly, Peppers is fourth on the team in all-purpose yards with 514. Coaches often talk about players that impact the game in more ways than one. Peppers is the gold-standard of that mantra.Expect him to be all over the field making plays during Saturday’s game. The defense is suffocatingOSU’s offense got smothered by Michigan State’s defense last week. Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, they’re going to be going up against an even better defense on Saturday. Michigan’s defense ranks second in the country in total defense, allowing just 263.1 yards per game. The Wolverines are allowing just 100.2 yards rushing per contest, while Peppers and the secondary are surrendering only 163 yards through the air. Both marks are good for fourth in the nation. The success in shutting down opponents starts with the defensive line. Senior defensive tackle Ryan Glasgow had been anchoring the unit, but he was lost for the season against Rutgers. Despite the loss, junior Maurice Hurst has filled in nicely at nose tackle. Flanking him on both sides are seniors Willie Henry and Chris Wormley.The trio does an incredible job occupying blockers, creating opportunities for the linebacking corps to crowd the line of scrimmage and pile up tackles. Two linebackers — senior Joe Bolden and redshirt senior Desmond Morgan — lead the Wolverines in tackles with 67 and 64, respectively. When teams get the ball on the perimeter, like Utah did against Michigan in the season opener, the linebackers get exposed a little bit because they’re not necessarily elite athletes. They’re an instinctive, hard-nose group, but that is their one weakness. Alongside Peppers in the secondary, juniors Chandler Stribbling, a physical 6-foot-2 cornerback, and Jourdan Lewis, are fundamentally sound. Durkin, who was a graduate assistant at Bowling Green under OSU coach Urban Meyer from 2001-02, will be creative in his blitz and coverage packages to try and confuse the Buckeye offense. Trending upFrom the season opener to now, the Michigan offense is different like night and day.The unit started slow, but as redshirt senior Jake Rudock, a graduate transfer from Iowa in his first year with the program, started to become more confident in Harbaugh’s scheme, the offense started to click. After scoring just 17 points against Utah in Week 1, the Wolverines have not scored fewer than 23 points in any game. Michigan, arguably, has the most talented group of pass catchers that OSU has faced at any point this season. Redshirt junior wide receivers Amara Darboh and Jehu Chesson — who have combined for 1160 receiving yards and 12 scores — will test the Buckeyes’ secondary with their top-end speed and precise route running. Complementing the duo is 6-foot-6 junior tight end Jake Butt. The Pickerington, Ohio, native uses his size to his advantage and is one of Rudock’s favorite targets on third down. Beyond those three, a strong group consisting of senior tight end A.J. Williams, freshman wide receiver Grant Perry and junior running back De’Veon Smith provide Rudock additional hands to throw to. Smith is also the leading rusher, carrying the ball 145 times for 621 yards and six touchdowns. The Warren, Ohio, native is a serviceable player, but this Michigan offense relies heavily on Rudock’s play. But as of late, Rudock’s play has been as good as any quarterback in the Big Ten. In the past three games, he’s thrown for over 344 yards and three touchdowns per game. As long as he continues that level of play, the Michigan offense will test the OSU defense on Saturday. Beyond the Buckeyes If Michigan beats OSU, and Michigan State loses to Penn State, then the Wolverines will be traveling to Indianapolis for the Big Ten Championship Game on Dec 5. If the said scenario does not happen, then Harbaugh and his team will wait patiently for its undecided bowl game.

Kolkata: A mock anti-hijacking drill was conducted on Monday at NSCBI Airport, Kolkata, wherein the response time of various agencies involved in the exercise was checked.The anti-hijack mock exercise was conducted by creating a situation akin to a plane hijack. The entire operation lasted for about an hour. The drill was successfully conducted without causing any inconvenience to airport operations. Measures taken during any eventuality of hijacking were deliberated in the meet. Last week, two Google Walkout organizers accused the company of retaliation against them over last year’s Google Walkout protest. The two Google employees, Claire Stapleton, YouTube Marketing Manager and Meredith Whittaker, head of Google’s Open Research were told their roles would change dramatically including calls to abandon AI ethics work, demotion, and more. In regards to this, both women hosted a Retaliation Town Hall to share their stories and strategize this Friday. The event was also live-streamed to other Google offices. 350+ Google staffers attended the Town Hall, where Stapleton said, that after her public sharing of retaliation earlier this week, Google executives tried to undermine her “in emails this week to thousands of my friends and colleagues”. In those emails, Google executives challenged Stapleton’s claim saying that she was “never demoted”. “What’s true is that there was a demotion, and after my lawyers got involved, it was reversed,” Stapleton wrote, in a statement viewed by Wired. Whittaker also provided further updates on the retaliation she faced. She said that her manager told her in late December she would likely need to leave Google’s Cloud division. The same manager told her in March that the “Cloud division was seeking more revenue and that AI Now and her AI ethics work was no longer a fit. This was a strange request because the Cloud unit has a team working on ethical concerns related to AI.” During the March meeting, Whittaker claims her manager also told her that there are “two kinds of people at Google…those who quit, and those who stay and hate every minute of it and try to destroy it. I was taken aback, since my work has always aimed to ensure that Google lived up to its purported values and treated its workforce, and the rest of the world, with respect.” Recently, Google dissolved it’s AI ethics council after nearly 2,600 employees, including Whittaker, signed a petition against the appointment of Kay Cole James, president of the Heritage Foundation. Employees were upset by James’ anti-trans and anti-immigrant political statements. Whittaker also signed the petition protesting Google’s infamous Project Dragonfly, the secretive search engine that Google is allegedly developing which will comply with the Chinese rules of censorship. Meredith Whittaker was also a leader in the anti-Maven movement. Google’s Project Maven, was focused on analyzing drone footage and could have been eventually used to improve drone strikes on the battlefield. More than 3,000 Google employees signed a petition against this project that led to Google deciding not to renew its contract with the U.S. Department of Defense in 2019. In her statement on Friday, Whittaker says that on April 1, a few days before the petition was drafted, she got approval from Jeff Dean to transfer from Cloud to Google’s Research and Machine Intelligence group. Two weeks after the petition was sent, Whittaker claims her transfer was killed. Other Google employees also spoke about employee discontent at Google ranging from the ethics of performing work for the US Department of Defense to the handling of sexual harassment claims. Following the statements of Whittaker and Stapleton in the town hall session, several current and former Googlers took to Twitter to register complaints and share their experiences of facing retaliation from the company. The document which was seen by The Guardian includes a “transparent, open investigation of HR and its abysmal handling of employee complaints relating to working conditions, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation”. Other demands include a public response from Google co-founder Larry Page, and that Google meets the demands that were issued in the Google walkout. “Google has had six months to meet [those] demands; in that time, they’ve partially met only one of them,” the document states. “Google seems to have lost its mooring and trust between workers and the company is deeply broken. The company has no clear direction and is just progressing from crisis to crisis lately.” Google did not respond to specific questions about the town hall’s meeting. A spokeswoman said in a statement: “We prohibit retaliation in the workplace and publicly share our very clear policy. To make sure that no complaint raised goes unheard at Google, we give employees multiple channels to report concerns, including anonymously, and investigate all allegations of retaliation.” Other activist and worker groups also rose in solidarity. “The impact @mer__edith has in AI ethics is second to none. The Federal Reserve is not currently forecasting a recession. – Ben Bernanke, January 10, 2008 With Ben Bernanke’s exit as Chairman of the Federal Reserve, every political physician will opine on his legacy. Many will view him as the savior of capitalism. The others will agree, but caveat the compliment by stating his monetary mischief eventually exceeded its necessity. So while some may debate recent Federal Reserve policy, all condone his reaction to the Great Recession of 2008. His legacy will be viewed as having acted promptly, properly, and aggressively to the greatest economic threat since the Great Depression, for quantitative easing and negligible interest rates are universally proclaimed to have stabilized the economy and set the stage for future growth. This author disagrees. Determining what Bernanke’s Federal Reserve should have done in a recession – and whether or not Bernanke acted properly – requires an examination of what causes recessions. Just as doctors can only properly treat patients with an understanding of germ theory, economists can only restore economic health through an understanding of business cycle theory. All cures require the cognizance of causality. Bernanke has always been portrayed as an “expert” on the Great Depression, so surely he must understand the true cause of business cycles. In 2002, he clearly stated he knew the origin of recessions (or at least deep recessions, a.k.a. depressions) and believed them relegated to history, never to return: I would like to say to Milton [Friedman] and Anna [Schwartz]: Regarding the Great Depression. You’re right, we did it. We’re very sorry. But thanks to you, we won’t do it again. What did the Federal Reserve do that Bernanke swore would never be repeated? What was this transgression it committed in causing the Great Depression? Bernanke, and all “monetarist” economists, blame the central bank’s contraction of the money supply. But clearly this did not cause the 2008 Great Recession, for none of the monetary metrics ever decreased. Faced with such facts, the Chairman of the Federal Reserve could reach one of two conclusions: either the 2008 Great Recession (and possibly all other recessions) had some different cause or causes relative to the Great Depression (which is nonsensical), or the monetarist theory of business cycles was in error. Bernanke chose the former. He chose unwisely. Is there a better explanation of the business cycle? One which describes all recessions and depressions? One which explains the widespread and severely erroneous judgment of businesses in forecasting the future as revealed in the “bust”? One which illustrates why it is a cycle, and why this cycle first appeared in the 19th century? One which justifies why capital goods industries are more sensitive to booms and busts relative to consumer goods industries? One which explicates why significant money supply expansion precedes every single recession? The Austrian school of economics has such an explanation. When a central bank increases the money supply with fiat currency, it artificially decreases interest rates. As interest rates are a universal market signal to all businesses, investments which previously appeared unprofitable now seem to make economic sense. However, these expenditures are actually being “malinvested” relative to the natural level of interest rates as determined by the supply and demand of savings. When a central bank ceases or severely mitigates its expansion of the money supply, the natural level of interest rates reasserts itself, and a recession ensues. Recessions are the beneficial period by which previous investment wastes and errors are corrected. The Austrian theory of the business cycle explains every phenomenon exhibited by every business cycle, and further explains its historical onset (concomitant with central banking and/or fiat currency). Recessions, while they may be postponed, cannot be avoided. As the eminent Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises noted: There is no means of avoiding the final collapse of a boom brought about by credit expansion. The alternative is only whether the crisis should come sooner as the result of a voluntary abandonment of further credit expansion, or later as a final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved. Bernanke chose the latter (and has timed his exit superbly to cover his culpability). So what should he (or any central banker) have done when overseeing a recession? Only one directive applies: do not interfere with the economy’s adjustment process (a.k.a. recession). Do not prevent the liquidation of assets (or companies) with bailouts. Do not stimulate consumption and discourage savings through deficits and other means. And above all, do not inflate the money supply again which will only bring another recession in the future (which is why business cycles are, indeed, cyclical). In light of what should not be done in a recession, Bernanke’s actions are an abject failure. For he responded to the Great Recession by advocating (with his Treasury troupe in tow) and/or performing a troika of trouble: big bailouts, huge deficits, and massive monetary expansion. In this dire economic situation, he responded with a disastrous blend of monetary omnipotence and judgmental incompetence. The Bernanke legacy will eventually be known for what he has caused: severe recessions, high inflation, and just possibly, a “final and total catastrophe of the currency system involved.” We will never forget you Ben, nor forgive you. We’re wiser, we’re a little bit sadder — but also we value what we have.”Interview Highlights On a frightening incident that happened when she was 18 and working at a retreat in a mountain valley I was on this walk … and I realized I had seen [a man] further down the valley, and I still don’t know how he got ahead of me to intercept me on the way up, and so I walked past him and then he came after me. And he said he wanted to show me a bird on the lake, and so he put his binocular strap around my neck, and I knew, as everybody does, that it wasn’t right, it wasn’t true, it wasn’t just about the bird, and I knew he meant to harm me. … I think there is a kind of almost animal instinct, a bit like dogs sniffing each other; you know that somebody means you harm.So I talked my way out of it. I just ducked out under the binocular strap and I talked to him and I kept him talking and I asked him about the birds and I knew that the only way I could save myself — because he was a lot bigger than me and he was a lot stronger than me — the only way to get out of there was to use my brain instead. …[Police] didn’t tell me anything, but they asked me about the incident in very close detail and then asked me to look at some photographs and to say if I saw the person with the binoculars among these photographs, which I did, and I pointed him out. I knew what had happened. I could sense it, and I said to them, “He has killed someone, hasn’t he?” And they wouldn’t tell me anything, but then a few days later I read in the newspaper that a girl had been killed, that she had been raped and then strangled and then buried not very far from where I had been walking.On overhearing a nurse say she was going to die when she was hospitalized with encephalitis, a virus in her cerebellum, at age 8 As a child nobody tells you things. All the conversation about you and your illness and your symptoms and your prospects are all done elsewhere — they’re all told to your parents when you’re not in the room. So you have to become this person who picks up on things. You’ve got to look at … the facial expressions of the people looking after you, your parents and the nurses and the doctors, you’ve got to try and interpret the silences around you, what people are saying and what they’re not saying.And so hearing from this nurse in the corridor mistakenly let slip that I was expected to die, I think that was the biggest shock to me. When I heard it, I knew it in a sense. It didn’t come as a huge shock, but it made everything that was happening around me suddenly made sense. I thought, “Of course. Of course I’m dying. How did I not realize that?” …You couldn’t hear that and not be changed by it. And then when I didn’t die they said I wouldn’t walk again, that I would lead a life of incapacity. And so for whatever reason, I managed to find a loophole out of both of those destinies that were mapped out for me. So I’ve always felt, really, since then, or I’ve grown up with this sense that I lived this almost charmed existence, that I managed to hoodwink these two paths in life, and almost as if I’m living on borrowed time or extra time. … I’ve always been really filled with the idea that I must make the most of it and I must live the biggest and the broadest life I possibly can, because it’s been a gift twice over.On nearly bleeding out during the birth of her first child I labored for three days — three very long days and nights, I would like to say — and after three days the baby’s heartrate was dipping and it was showing signs of distress. So I said I really need to talk to a doctor. … And the doctor who came to my bedside was the very same doctor who I had seen all those months before who had been so rude to me, and so I begged for a cesarean. … And he did grant me a cesarean, but he said it would go down on my notes as medically unnecessary and thought I was being hysterical and lying.So basically what happened in the operation was that because the labor had gone on for so long, my son had got jammed in an immovable position and so they had to kind of wrestle to get him out, poor child. And during that something must’ve ruptured because I started hemorrhaging and started losing blood. This is quite graphic, all my intestines came out. Everything came out of my abdomen, so they had to try to get it all back in again, and stop the bleeding and it was all going pretty badly wrong.On staying calm when her daughter is experiencing a life-threatening allergic reactionThe most useful thing that someone told me — and this is a friend of mine who actually is a play therapist, so she’s trained to play with children in hospital — and [what] she said to me is, “What you have to remember is that your emotions and your daughter’s emotions are on a loop. Imagine for a minute: A company makes a vaccine that protects kids from a life-threatening disease but, with little warning, decides to stop selling it in the U.S.That’s exactly what happened last year in West Africa, for a vaccine against rotavirus — a disease that kills about 200,000 young children and babies each year.As NPR reported in November, the pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co. Inc. announced it was ending a long-term agreement to supply its rotavirus vaccine, RotaTeq, at a reduced price to families in four West African countries. At the same time, the company began selling the vaccine in China, for more than 12 times the price.Merck’s decision meant that more than 2 million babies were at risk of missing the vaccine, health experts told NPR.”You have a major manufacturer of a vaccine announcing that they’re going to exit from the market, and it created a bit of a panic for countries that were accustomed to having this vaccine,” says Deborah Atherly of the nonprofit PATH, which helps develop vaccines for low-income countries.Now the situation has changed — for the good.After NPR broke the news of Merck’s pullout, other vaccine manufacturers stepped up to fill in the gap. “Because of these efforts, very few to no children will miss out on rotavirus vaccination in these four countries,” Gavi wrote to NPR in an email.This is a huge success story, Atherly says. “We deal with tons of challenges in global health, and this is one, in which the global health community rallying with the countries, has really created success.”Rotavirus is a ubiquitous infection. “Almost every child, whether you live in the U.S. or you live in a developing country, is infected with this disease,” says Dr. Mathuram Santosham, a pediatrician at Johns Hopkins University who has studied the disease for more than 40 years. In rich countries, the infections are rarely lethal but can be severe. Before the U.S. introduced the rotavirus vaccine in 2006, infections caused more than 50,000 hospitalizations each year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says.In poor countries, without good health care systems, rotavirus can be deadly. Children can have six to 20 bouts of diarrhea in a day and dehydrate extremely fast, Santosham says. “It is particularly important for the children in the poorest countries — and the poorest children in the poor countries — to receive this vaccine.”But the vaccine is expensive. Here in the U.S., it costs about $200 for a course of two-to-three doses administered in the first year of a baby’s life. So in 2012, the two companies that manufacture a vaccine, Merck and GlaxoSmithKline, agreed to drastically reduce the price for poor countries to about $10 a course.For six years, the pharmaceutical companies stuck to those agreements. GSK delivered nearly 220 million doses to 42 countries. And Merck delivered more than 30 million doses to four countries in West Africa — Burkina Faso, Ivory Coast, Mali, and São Tomé and Príncipe.But last year, Merck informed UNICEF and Gavi that it would not ship about a third of those doses for 2018 and 2019. And in 2020, the company would stop supplying the vaccine altogether to West Africa. The company told NPR that “supply constraints” were preventing it from fulfilling its agreement to the West African countries. The company also expressed “deepest regret to all of the parties involved” in an email to NPR.It looked like more than 2 million babies would go without the vaccine. At the time, GSK told NPR it wasn’t able to help the countries in West Africa because the company was experiencing its own supply problems. “We also cannot confirm the availability of the doses necessary to support new programmes in 2019,” the company wrote in an email.But then after NPR’s story aired, GSK changed course. The company is now filling in almost half of the vaccine gap left by Merck. Earlier this year, GSK begun supplying Rotarix to the Ivory Coast — where nearly a million babies are born each year. “GSK is pleased that we have sufficient capacity and hopes to fulfill the demand for Rotarix in Ivory Coast for as long as required,” a spokesperson wrote in an email to NPR.The other part of the vaccine gap will be filled largely by one of two Indian pharmaceutical companies. Last year, the World Health Organization gave its stamp of recommendation two new rotavirus vaccines, Rotavac and Rotasiil, which are manufactured by Bharat Pharmaceuticals and Serum Institute of India, respectively. Back in November, health experts said three West African countries — Mali, Burkino Faso, and São Tomé and Príncipe — would eventually switch to these vaccines. But that was expected to take at least two years.Now all three countries are speeding up the timeline and plan to roll out the new vaccine by 2020, says Heather Deehan, chief of UNICEF’s Vaccine Centre. In the meantime, the countries are relying on stocks of the Merck vaccine to continue immunizations.”As a result of a strong collaboration among UNICEF, the countries and manufacturers, there was no interruption in the countries’ vaccine programs,” Deehan says.In a follow-up interview with NPR, Merck’s chief marketing officer, Michael Nally, said that one reason the company ended its agreement with Gavi was because the competing vaccines were more desirable for low-income countries than RotaTeq. GSK’s vaccine requires one less dose, while the Indian vaccines will be less expensive.”We’ve had to come to a conversation around, we are probably not going to be the product of choice in those markets,” Nally said.In the meantime, Merck has successfully launched sales of RotaTeq in China. The vaccine is now available in at least seven Chinese provinces, and a course costs about $130, or about 12 times the cost of the vaccine in the West Africa. A disabled MP has spoken of her pride at being able to speak openly about being dyspraxic, after having to hide her diagnosis from employers for years before she entered parliament.Emma Lewell-Buck (pictured) was previously a social worker but was “acutely aware that if there were any job cuts that would come around, it would be used against me and I would be the first one in the dole queue”.She said sheused to take work home with her at weekends, work late into the evening andstart early in the morning because, like many other disabled people, she feltshe had to “go the extra mile” and “work that little bit harder to proveyourself or keep up”.She wasspeaking at the launch event of Neurodivergent Labour (see separate story), a political campaign group that will fight forthe rights of people with neurological differences such as autism, dyslexia,dyspraxia and dyscalculia, both within the party and in wider society.Lewell-Buck,the shadow minister for children and families – who later confirmed toDisability News Service that she is happy to be described as a disabled MP –said that being dyspraxic affected her every day in her work.She said:“Every single thing I do I need to prep for meticulously, down to the tiniestdetail. “But I’m oneof the lucky ones because I am in a job where I can openly speak about mydisability and I can use my profile to raise awareness.”The MP forSouth Shields said she was only diagnosed at the age of 27, after beingassessed by an educational psychologist on the advice of a lecturer while shewas studying for a masters degree.She said:“My whole life clicked into place. I suddenly realised why, when I was growingup, I always felt different to other kids and always used to isolate myself. “I realisedwhy I put my shoes on the wrong feet, why I couldn’t tie my laces properly,button my coat up, why I was always spilling my drinks and why the whole familyalways referred to me as ‘our clumsy Emma’. “I wasalways so frustrated that things that used to come so easily to other kids wereso, so hard for me.”This caused“tremendous low self-esteem and self-confidence” as a child, she said.But she saidshe now saw her dyspraxia as an advantage.She said: “Ijust see it as I’m a little bit different to some of those around me. I’veembraced it. “It doesn’tdefine me, it’s just part of me. I’ve been forced to adapt and face thosechallenges, and come up with solutions, and I certainly don’t feeldisadvantaged.”She thankedthose neurodivergent party members who had developed the idea of the neworganisation, as well as shadow chancellor John McDonnell, who has supportedthe idea over the last three years and spoke at Saturday’s launch event.She said:“It is thanks to you that people like me have the confidence to talk about andembrace who we are and thanks to all of you that the fabulously neurodivergentpeople have been given this platform to help us on the way to that much-neededsocietal and cultural shift.”Lewell-Bucksaid that she, McDonnell and other Labour colleagues were “determined to changethe culture of our society and how neurodivergent people and people withdisabilities are treated. “Ourapproach is a clear move away from the dehumanising and debilitating hostileenvironment we have seen under the Tories to one where people will be treatedwith dignity and respect.”She said itwas “the neurodivergent people in this world who have always been the bigthinkers, and creators and innovators. “We are theones who always have the ability to think outside the box and come up withsolutions to some of the world’s greatest problems.”Among thedecisions agreed by the launch event was to endorse a draft Labour autism andneurodiversity manifesto that neurodivergent party members have spent threeyears developing.Included inthe manifesto are calls for neurodiversity training for all teachers andteaching assistants as part of their “core training”, support forneurodivergent students, smaller class sizes, and neurodiversity to be includedin the school curriculum.Lewell-Buck,who is leading on Labour’s special educational needs and disabilities (SEND)reforms, said the proposals in the draft manifesto were “an exact fit to thosethat I have been arguing for behind the scenes in my team meetings”, becauseshe was committed to making SEND “an embedded and intrinsic part of our overalleducation system”.She saidthat a good education “can make the difference between where you begin in lifeand where you end up. “I am livingproof of that: a dyspraxic, dyslexic, shy working-class girl, growing up on theestate where I did, and never destined to be a member of parliament. “So goodeducation can absolutely make the impossible happen. Since 2009, the company has aggressively expanded to more than 450 cities, at times steamrolling regulators and launching campaigns against local lawmakers.Jones joined Target in 2012 to rejuvenate its brand and is credited with modernizing the retailer’s marketing efforts. Reviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. (Editor)May 10 2019A novel imaging technique that uses a synthesized form of scorpion venom to light up brain tumors has shown promise in a clinical trial. The imaging system enables neurosurgeons to better see malignant growths that often are difficult to fully eliminate.Results from the multi-institutional clinical trial, led by investigators from Cedars-Sinai and sponsored by Blaze Bioscience, Inc., appear in the journal Neurosurgery.The new imaging technique that was studied uses a special high-sensitivity near-infrared camera developed at Cedars-Sinai, along with the imaging agent tozuleristide, or BLZ-100, developed by Blaze. The agent contains a synthetic version of an amino acid compound found in scorpion venom.Like the natural form of the compound, the synthetic version is not toxic and binds to tumor cells. It is attached to a fluorescent dye that glows when stimulated by a near-infrared laser. Viewed through the camera, the imaging agent might allow neurosurgeons to detect the boundaries between tumors and healthy brain tissue during surgery, improving the opportunity for surgeons to remove tumor cells while sparing normal brain tissue.”With this fluorescence, you see the tumor so much clearer because it lights up like a Christmas tree,” said Adam Mamelak, MD, senior author and investigator in the trial.That is important because of the sprawling nature of gliomas, the type of brain tumors imaged during the trial. Gliomas are highly lethal and comprise about 33% of all brain tumors. They can infiltrate brain tissue with tentacle-like structures, making them difficult to distinguish from normal brain tissue. They typically do not respond to traditional therapies such as chemotherapy and radiation. The key to extending patient survival depends on a surgeon’s ability to detect and remove all parts of the tumor.In the clinical trial, 17 adult patients with brain tumors were given varying doses of BLZ-100 before surgery. Despite the varying amounts of the drug given, the majority of tumors fluoresced, including both high- and low-grade gliomas. After surgery, patients were monitored for 30 days. But Mamelak said the clinical trial results were promising.”For a surgeon, this seamless integration of fluorescence imaging into the surgical microscope is very appealing,” Mamelak said.Unlike other experimental systems that are bulkier or rely on multiple cameras, the new imaging system uses a single camera that takes both near-infrared and white-light images by alternating between a laser and normal white lights at very high speeds. This technology enables surgeons to easily switch back and forth between “normal” vision using a surgical microscope and fluorescent “super-vision” on a nearby monitor, in real time.The next phase of this research, already underway, is a clinical trial involving pediatric brain tumors, taking place at up to 14 sites nationwide. This trial will serve as a data set for potential FDA approval. A similar adult clinical trial is also being planned. The United States has been lobbying for allied countries and companies to block Huawei from providing equipment for fifth-generation cell networks, claiming it could facilitate digital espionage by the Chinese government.Germany has made clear in recent weeks that it doesn’t plan to pre-emptively exclude specific companies from bidding for contracts, but instead wants to set minimum standards that all suppliers have to meet.According to the new guidelines published by Germany’s Economic Ministry and the Federal Network Agency, systems for networks including 5G “may only be sourced from trustworthy suppliers whose compliance with national security regulations and provisions for the secrecy of telecommunications and for data protection is assured.”Other “key elements” are that network traffic “must be regularly and constantly monitored for any abnormality” and security-related components have to be certified by Germany’s IT security agency.The guidelines also stipulate that networks should use components from several manufacturers and provide for redundancy of key equipment.The agencies said companies will have an opportunity to comment on the guidelines.It is unclear whether Huawei would be able to fulfill the requirements as they currently stand, because as a Chinese company it may be compelled to provide authorities in the communist nation with access to its networks.The company this week opened a cybersecurity lab in Brussels in a bid to win over European governments and already has a similar center in Bonn, Germany.Its main rivals in the market for super-fast, 5G-network equipment are European companies Ericsson and Nokia.
