Evergreen to Sign “Real Food Challenge” April 22

first_imgSubmitted by The Evergreen State CollegePhoto by Shauna Bittle, Courtesy of The Evergreen State College. On Earth Day, Wednesday, April 22, The Evergreen State College will sign the Real Food Campus Commitment, thereby committing the campus to source 28% of food for its dining program from local and sustainable vendors. Evergreen’s President, Dr. Les Purce, will sign the commitment at 5 p.m. in the Olympia Campus Longhouse, at a reception catered by Aramark, after which a conversation with international activists/pranksters/parodists, The Yes Men, will follow. The Real Food Campus Commitment is part of the The Real Food Challenge—a national, student-led movement to steer college dining service vendors away from highly processed food and industrial farms with unfair labor and inhumane farming practices. The Campus Food Coalition at Evergreen led the campaign for better school food.About The Real Food ChallengeThe Real Food Challenge encourages U.S. college campuses to source 20% of their food or more from humane, fair, ecologically sound, local and community-based farms, ranches and manufacturers. Already at 25% real food, Evergreen and its dining services vendor, Aramark, have set a goal of annually procuring 28% real food by 2020.Evergreen joins notable colleges already striving to meet the Real Food Challenge nationally, among them Johns Hopkins and Cornell. Evergreen will be the first public school in Washington State to make this commitment, and the second school that contracts with Aramark. Gonzaga University was the first school in Washington to join, and student leaders at Western Washington University and the University of Washington are campaigning for their universities to commit.Evergreen Celebrates Earth DayIn addition to the Real Food Challenge, Evergreen, a college known for its commitment to sustainability, will host a student-led Earth Day festival from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 22.Activities will range from tours of The Organic Farm, aquaponics facilities, and shellfish garden to an open mic and acoustic performances in the Student Art Gallery. Gas Hard to Find, Some Drivers Angry

first_imgBy Brian DeakyneSeveral things have improved since Monday when Hurricane Sandy left her vicious mark in the Two River area, but one thing definitely hasn’t gotten better. As of Friday afternoon, lines at gasoline stations were still miles long, leaving some residents distraught after sitting for hours and still far to go.“I went to get gas at the Wawa in Leonardo and was waiting for four hours,” said John Sykes of Atlantic Highlands. “I was waiting in my car, and they told me the car wait was longer, so I got out of my car and stood there” with gas cans. Some residents have suggested getting gas at odd hours, such as in the middle of the night, hoping that the lines might be less crowded and the wait would be shorter. While many residents were angry about the wait, Sykes noted that some people had joined together during the hour-long wait.“Surprisingly, people were in good spirits. They had State Troopers controlling the area, so it was pretty crazy,” he said. Many gasoline stations were closed down on Friday. Some never opened after the hurricane, others ran out of gas after begin able to open shortly after roads were re-opened Wednesday and Thursday.“I got pretty lucky, actually,” said Mary Chamerblin of Little Silver. “I had to get gas on (Thursday and Friday) and I never waited longer than an hour for either one.”Like practically everyone else on the line, Chamberlin had to get gas for two different things, her car and a generator. Also like others, she said her car was running on fumes by the time she reached the pump. She got gas at the BP gasoline station in West Long Branch and the Wawa in Tinton Falls. One of the few open stations Friday afternoon was the Shell Gas Station on Shrewsbury Avenue. At one point the line stretched from the station at the corner of Newman Springs Road all the way to the Red Bank railroad station. That forced police officers to divert other traffic to side streets and direct those trying to get into the gas line. Some residents, who did not want to give their names, were angry that so few gasoline stations were open four days after the hurricane. They were also unhappy that some stations ran out of gas even through they sat in line for hours.Throughout Red Bank and sections of Middletown, traffic was snarled as many people searched for gas that will be hard to come until power is restored. The Exxon station on Shrewsbury Avenue, across the street from Shell station, was closed Friday, along with the Exxon station and BP station at the corner of Swimming River and Newman Springs roads in Middletown.“I’m surprised a lot more gas stations don’t have generators to get going,” Sykes said. “They could be making bank.”last_img read more

How a ‘Weird’ Decision Led to the Growth of Both Adobe and Silicon Slopes

first_img Why IoT Apps are Eating Device Interfaces Related Posts Brad AndersonEditor In Chief at ReadWrite Trends Driving the Loyalty Marketing Industry How a Big Bet Paid Off for Adobe and Salt Lake CityA big bet paid off for both Adobe and Salt Lake City.Every decision a company makes has a ripple effect — not only for that business, but also for an entire region or industry. Tech hubs certainly don’t happen overnight, but they usually kick into gear with the first big decision.A decade ago, Adobe acquired Omniture, a web analytics business. It was a move that puzzled many: Business Insider called it “weird,” and The Wall Street Journal asked, “What were they thinking?” The reason for the confusion? It was too early for many to see the challenge that brands were going to face: the intersection of digital disruption with the explosion of data. But Adobe took a calculated risk, and it paid off. Adobe Analytics Cloud isn’t just surviving a battle with analytics powerhouses like Google; it’s thriving.  How Adobe’s Bet Paid Off Internally and ExternallyGoogle has built a strong, easy-to-use analytics tool for the masses; it’s no surprise that it’s encountered the success it has. Adobe Analytics has taken a different tack, evolving past metrics to leverage machine learning, AI, and other modern data analysis to help the enterprise sector, in particular, achieve the analytics and tracking needed.Between 2014 and now, the number of Analytics Cloud customers has more than doubled. Fifty-eight percent of the Fortune 100 use Adobe Analytics Cloud for customer intelligence. That includes the top 10 media and entertainment brands, the top 10 retailers, nine of the top 10 financial services institutions, and nine of the top 10 high-tech companies. When Omniture sold for $1.8 billion, it did just as much for Salt Lake City as it did for Adobe. It triggered a movement of other large companies following Adobe’s lead in creating a presence in the area; Salt Lake’s list now includes Snap, Mavenlink, Salesforce, Oracle, and Microsoft. But more importantly, Adobe’s big bet helped Silicon Slopes become a legitimate name and issued a rallying cry for the area. One key acquisition or success story can set the stage for an entire region. Adobe took its economic strength in the area a step further, keeping all staff, building a new office in Lehi, and currently constructing a second office. The Silicon Slopes Get SteeperThe Silicon Slopes’ tech success, of course, doesn’t begin and end with Adobe. One giant business in an area makes people take notice, but startups going public and continuing to grow in an area — that’s what creates an identity. Qualtrics, Pluralsight, and Domo have all become multibillion-dollar unicorns from Salt Lake City. Domo, in fact, was founded by Josh James, Omniture’s founder. And while other regions may compare themselves to Silicon Valley in one way or another — or more likely, point to their contrasts — Silicon Slopes feels like an appropriate name. Companies are getting funded, and two major universities — the University of Utah and Brigham Young University — are located within an hour of the city, providing talent. The entire community, from higher education to real estate, feeds off of the shared success of these businesses. After all, every tech employee needs places to sleep, play, and eat.The wide-ranging infrastructure of the Silicon Slopes ecosystem even enables a boomerang effect. Because there are enough high-tech opportunities to keep active minds engaged, the area empowers people to jump from company to company and find their way back to their original spot. The Slopes will never achieve the scale of the Valley, and it doesn’t need to: It has an identity, a reason for companies to want to be there. How Adobe Will Navigate New SlopesTen years ago, Adobe made two key decisions: to acquire Omniture and to set up shop in Salt Lake City. Today, that team — now with the backing and support of Adobe — is still looking to innovate. By keeping the same teams and culture in place, it’s been able to shift faster and stay in tune with the changing tech landscape.Currently, the team is working on Journey IQ, powered by Adobe Sensei, which shows brands missed opportunities. It also delves into how engagement levels have evolved over time, as well as how customers behave, both pre- and post-event for any type of action, such as a purchase. For example, a retailer can get insight into a customer who was looking at a toy on his mobile device, but ultimately decided not to purchase it.The team is also integrating with another recent Adobe acquisition from Denver: Marketo. In an industry-first integration, Adobe Analytics’ rules-based attribution models in Analysis Workspace are combined with Bizible by Marketo. This enables modern intelligence teams to understand engagement on a deeper level, resulting in more targeted marketing initiatives. The next time the media labels a move as weird or questions what a company may be thinking, remember that a major acquisition can ripple throughout an entire community. That $1.8 billion price tag seems small in retrospect — simply look at the business it’s created for Adobe and the presence it’s created in Salt Lake City. Eight new paramedics and two new ambulances coming to the Peace Region

first_imgFORT ST JOHN, B.C. – B.C. Emergency Health Services announced today that eight new paramedic positions and two new ambulances will be coming to Fort St John and Dawson Creek later this year. Currently, both communities have been staffed by a mixture of full-time and on-call paramedics. BCEHS says the addition of eight new paramedics will allow for a more stable staffing model in Northeastern BC. “This investment will help improve access to care for people living in the Peace Region,” said Health Minister Adrian Dix. “These additional ambulances and full-time positions will help strengthen health-care services the community counts on, and make sure paramedics are there when people need them.”In addition to the eight full-time positions, the two new ambulances will help make sure resources are available to respond to medical 9-1-1 emergencies and will be available to assist with scheduled hospital transfers. The new ambulances will also be able to assist the nearby communities of Chetwynd, Tumbler Ridge and Hudson’s Hope when needed.last_img read more

Nadal wins 9th Rome title

first_imgROME: Rafael Nadal is right back where he wants to be. After losing in the semifinals of three straight clay-court tournaments, Nadal dominated for stretches against his longtime rival, Novak Djokovic, in a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 win Sunday for a record-extending ninth Italian Open title. It marked the first time in an Open Era-record 54 meetings, and in their 142nd set against each other, that Nadal won a set against Djokovic without conceding a game – otherwise known as a Also Read – We will push hard for Kabaddi”s inclusion in 2024 Olympics: Rijijubagel. The timing for Nadal’s return to form could not have been more opportune, as he will seek a record-extending 12th title at the French Open starting next weekend. ”Winning a title is important but for me the most important thing is feel myself competitive, feel myself healthy,” Nadal said. ”Then with the feeling that I am improving. I know if I’m able to reach my level you can win, you can lose, but normally I’m going to have my chances, especially on this surface.” Also Read – Djokovic to debut against Shapovalov at Shanghai MastersTop-ranked Djokovic, meanwhile, appeared exhausted after spending more than 5 1/2 hours on court against Juan Martin del Potro and Diego Schwartzman the previous two days. Djokovic was also coming off the Madrid Open title last week. ”I don’t want to talk about fatigue or things like that,” Djokovic said. ”Rafa was simply too strong today.” In the women’s final earlier, Karolina Pliskova captured the biggest clay-court trophy of her career by beating Johanna Konta 6-3, 6-4. The Foro Italico crowd continually tried to encourage Djokovic with chants of ”Vai Nole!” – Go Nole! – but the top-ranked Serb struggled with his overhead and drop shots. Midway through the second set, Nadal chased down a lob with an over-the-shoulder shot and Djokovic’s ensuing overhead landed in the net to conclude a long point. Djokovic again netted an overhead in the next game and then kicked the ball in frustration when he missed a drop shot attempt late in the second. But Djokovic hung around in the second and converted his first set point when a looping forehand from Nadal sailed wide for his first break of the match. As he walked to his chair after winning the second set, Djokovic waved his arms to get the crowd behind him. However, Djokovic didn’t have much left in the tank. When Nadal pushed Djokovic deep into the corner in the opening game of the third set and Djokovic’s desperation lob sailed long to hand Nadal a break, Djokovic smashed his racket to the clay three times in frustration and received a warning from the chair umpire. Djokovic won only 29 percent of the points on his second serve and committed 39 unforced errors to Nadal’s 17. Also, Nadal won 23 of the 31 rallies with nine or more shots. It was his 81st tournament win and it takes him 34-33 ahead of Djokovic in Masters 1,000 Series titles. Victory is a boost before the French Open for Nadal, who was beaten by Djokovic in the Australian Open final in January, and had lost at the semi-final stage in his past four tournaments. Since 2005, Nadal has won at least one of the nine Masters 1,000 events in a season every year except 2015. Nadal and Djokovic will be the top two seeds in the second major of the year at Roland Garros later this month.last_img read more

NBA Teams Are Resting Players Earlier And Earlier

This NBA season has produced plenty of eye-popping box scores, but some of the most talked about stat lines recently have been the ones filled with zeroes and marked by a controversial note: Did Not Play-rest.On March 11, Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr opted to keep his core players — Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala — out of his team’s marquee matchup with the San Antonio Spurs, citing a desire to protect his players’ health after Golden State’s 11,000 miles of travel over the preceding 13 days. One week later, the coach of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Tyronn Lue, held out LeBron James, Kyrie Irving and Kevin Love from the team’s own nationally televised game against the Los Angeles Clippers. Those benchings apparently did not sit well with the NBA’s commissioner, Adam Silver, who sent team owners a memo saying that the coaching practice of resting healthy players is an “extremely significant issue” for the league. And Silver’s comments didn’t sit well with James: “I don’t understand why it’s become a problem now, because I sit out a couple games?”James is right: NBA players have been getting extra days off for years. But lately teams are embracing rest more than they ever have before, perhaps because coaches are convinced that giving a player a night off here and there can help a team come playoff time. If you’re looking for someone to credit or blame for the recent popularity of this philosophy, look no further than San Antonio. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is the guru of rest. Mike BudenholzerHawks1919 NBA players who have missed the most games because of rest Gregg PopovichSpurs61113 Paul PierceCeltics, Nets, Wizards, Clippers14 PLAYERTEAMGAMES MISSED FOR REST Rajon RondoCeltics, Kings, Mavericks16 Tim DuncanSpurs38 Tyronn LueCavaliers1515 Brett Brown76ers1515 Mike BrownCavaliers, Lakers—16 Dwane CaseyRaptors1919 Rick CarlisleMavericks3241 Doc RiversCeltics, Clippers2245 Tony ParkerSpurs17 Since 2006,1In our data set, the first instance of a rest notation is from a Phoenix Suns game on April 14, 2006. there have been 609 instances of a player missing a game because he was resting, according to a query of over 50,000 injury reports from Pro Sports Transactions Archive, a database containing NBA transactions dating back to the 1940s.2For all NBA games available in the archive, we queried injury reports for descriptions that included the word “rest.” In an email, the archive’s curator, Frank Marousek, said this would return “most (if not all) of the rest games” in the archive, whose injury data is drawn from internet sources, including media reports, as well as league and team contacts. Popovich has been responsible for 113 of those 609 games missed by healthy players — more than twice as many as any other coach — and even twice as many as any other franchise. (All the data in this piece is current through March 16 of this year.) And his influence has bled into the rest of the league, with many of his former coaching assistants (Mike Budenholzer, Mike Brown, Brett Brown) and former players (Steve Kerr) becoming some of the most enthusiastic adopters of the DNP-rest once they became head coaches for other teams.Popovich was also the first coach to unexpectedly rest four key players in the thick of the regular season for a nationally televised game — a strategy for which the Spurs were fined $250,000 by the league in 2012. His decision to send home Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Danny Green and Tony Parker before a November game against the Heat was the prototype for the prime-time no-shows that have echoed through the league in recent weeks.Popovich has defended his approach to player rest. “It’s a trade-off,” he said earlier this month. “You want to see this guy in this one game? Or do you want to see him for three more years in his career? And do you want to see him in the playoffs because he didn’t get hurt because maybe he got rest?”It’s unclear if regular-season rest really can prevent playoff injuries, but that hasn’t stopped Popovich from trying. In the 2013-14 season, Pop strategically managed the workload of his 30-something star trio, choosing to rest Duncan, Ginobili and Parker 10 times combined over the course of the season. Duncan, in particular, was given ample opportunities to relax. The Ageless One skipped a game each month in November, December, March and April and had two games off in February. Later that year, the Spurs beat the Heat to win the championship in part because James suffered through painful cramps during his fourth consecutive playoff run to the finals after a 2,900-minute regular season. Duncan, Ginobili and Parker, meanwhile, poured it on during the series, playing an extra 3.9, 5.9, and 5.8 minutes per game, respectively, than they did during the regular season. It’s impossible to say what role the extra rest played — but it couldn’t have hurt.Like his rivals, James has been taking the occasional day off for years, but until recently, 90 percent of his rest days came in April, during the final two weeks of the season — including three games in the last week of the 2011-12 Heat campaign. But during the past two seasons, the Cavaliers have taken a page out of Popovich’s book and embraced a near Duncan-esque rest program for LeBron. During Cleveland’s championship run last season, James skipped at least one game in each of December, February, March and April. This season, he’s missed games in November, December and March, with more rest likely leading up to the playoffs. As a result, James finds himself rocketing up the all-time “DNP-rest” list for NBA players. Predictably, the Spurs’ Big Three hold prominent positions on the list. But with Duncan (No. 1) and his longtime foe Kevin Garnett (No. 3) resting comfortably in retirement, James is in position to eventually overtake the top spot.3Teams’ injury descriptions are taken at face value. In the case of Joel Embiid, for instance, another team might have chosen a different description for his injury, but the Sixers listed it as “rest.” Dwyane WadeHeat, Bulls12 Joel Embiid76ers11 George KarlNuggets, Kings1826 Kevin GarnettCeltics, Nets, Timberwolves23 Steve KerrWarriors1919 LeBron JamesCavaliers, Heat19 Source: Pro Sports Transactions Archive Manu GinobiliSpurs26 LeBron’s recent increase in games missed for rest is emblematic of broader league-wide trends. Each season, the number of games missed to rest is increasing, and the timing of the missed games is shifting earlier and earlier into the season. Coaches who have rested players the most Source: Pro Sports Transactions Archive Mike WoodsonHawks, Knicks—16 Dirk NowitzkiMavericks12 BENCHINGS ATTRIBUTED TO REST COACHTEAMLAST 3 SEASONSTOTAL From 2005-06 to 2010-11, the overwhelming majority of games missed for rest were in April — at the very end of the season. In 2011-12, as a result of a lockout-condensed schedule, teams started resting players in January, February and March. (I looked into why there was such a dip in 2012-13, and there wasn’t a clear explanation.4The number of total injury entries in the Pro Sports Transactions Archive for 2012-13 is comparable to other nearby years, so there’s no reason to think there were data reporting problems for that season.) More recently, the tendency has been to rest players even earlier — like, in October. From 2005-06 to 2007-08, only teams that were in position to make the playoffs5I.e., teams that ranked among the top eight in their conference’s standings at the time of the DNP-rest — meaning they would make the playoffs if the season ended that day — as opposed to teams that ranked ninth or worse. rested players. Since then, the practice has spread — teams outside the playoff picture have accounted for 36 percent of the games missed for rest so far this season. But it’s the rest decisions of contenders that make headlines and invite controversy. Consider the outcome of the two ambitious rest campaigns discussed above — Duncan’s in 2013-14 and James’s in 2015-16 — both were rewarded with the NBA championship. Compare that to the Warriors’s meltdown in last year’s finals after they spurned rest in the regular season and hard-charged their way to the all-time single-season win record. For teams with serious championship aspirations, the motivation for rest is clear. It’s likely going to take more than a strongly worded memo from the league office to convince them otherwise. read more

Ohio State womens rowing team sets sights on fourpeat

The Ohio State women’s rowing team competes on May 30, 2015 at the NCAA qualifying round in Gold River, Calif. Credit: Courtesy of OSU AthleticsAs the Ohio State rowing team looks ahead to going after an unprecedented fourth straight national championship in 2016, the squad is working hard to prepare itself and stay focused on the season ahead.“It’s kind of an indescribable feeling because at the end, you all realize how much work you all put in for this moment,” junior MaryClare Stannard said. The team captured its third consecutive championship last year, becoming the first in NCAA history to do so.“When we won, I was just so happy for everyone in the boat and on the the team,” junior Casey Schaffer said. There is a lot of buzz surrounding the team and the possibility of repeating yet again, and everyone involved in the program knows it.“We try to stay humble, and we gotta make sure there’s no cutting corners,” Stannard said.Assistant coaches Madeline Davis and Anna Goodale take a similar viewpoint in focusing on the now.“I tell them ‘one stroke at a time,’ because you will not get better if you skip over and not pay attention to what’s right in front of you,” Goodale said.Davis added that the team’s main focus has to be improving, even after reaching the pinnacle three years in a row.“At every opportunity you have to take a step forward, take it,” Davis said. Both Davis and Goodale have professional experience in rowing, having competed on the U.S. women’s national team.Goodale, the newest addition to the coaching staff, was a member of the women’s eight team that won a gold medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.The women’s eight team, which is a team in rowing that has eight members in the boat, with four oars on either side for propulsion and a rudder manned by a coxswain, is the group which took home the individual championship for OSU.The team works hard to keep focused through a culture of camaraderie.“We are honestly a family,” Schaffer said. “I’ve never been a part of such an empowering group of young female athletes.”Stannard agreed that it is a very close-knit group.“We feed off of each other as teammates,” Stannard said. “We can’t do it without each other.”The 2016 schedule has yet to be released, but the season is set to begin in late March. read more

Davide Astori is still with us – Stefano Pioli declares

first_imgHead coach of Italian football club Fiorentina, Stefano Pioli, has set his sight on Europe and the Coppa Italia, as he reveals the bond between the club and former captain Davide Astori who died in his sleep in March.Even though the Viola comes as a surprise package of the season so far in Serie A, they could battle for a top-four finish.“I would very much like to qualify for Europe, but it won’t be easy. I think it’s clear to all that there are teams better equipped out there, but we’re ready to take advantage of any slip-ups,” said the Coach at a Q&A with La Repubblica newspaper via Football Italia.“At this moment, I see a Fiorentina side that is ambitious, but not winning yet. There is a step between ambition and victory that we still need to cover. The Coppa Italia cannot be considered a secondary objective and it’s only right to target going all the way.”“Astori and Milan Badelj were my reference points in the locker room. The team had changed so much that summer and I leaned on them for support, as everyone did with Davide.“What happened was a shock and it pushed me to appreciate my players even more on a human level. What Vitor Hugo said recently is the truth: Davide is still with us.Cristiano Ronaldo, JuventusSerie A Betting: Match-day 3 Stuart Heath – September 14, 2019 Considering there is a number of perfect starts so early in the Serie A season, as well as a few surprisingly not-so perfect ones….“The lads who were here last season have done so well to pass that situation on to the new arrivals. We are a team with an extra reason to do well.“These lads were so strong and united in their grief. I simply told them to carry on what we had started with Astori. I always did get very fond of my players, but even more so with this group. I think what happened united us even more and made us feel stronger.”Meanwhile, when Cristiano Biraghi scored his debut Italy goal in the Nations League victory over Poland, he took his fingers high and formed the figure 13  which we think symbolises Astori’s number.“I was so proud of him after that goal, for the work we’d done together and his great desire to improve. Biraghi was always aware of his weaknesses and is one of those players I feel that as a Coach I can really help to grow stronger.“Federico Chiesa has a great chance of pace, can shoot with his right or left foot, and is approaching a level that will make him a complete player.”last_img read more

Middle Caicos has a new man in charge

Johnson is not only a descendant of Middle Caicos, according to the Deputy Governor, but his educational background with a degree in International Business from Johnson and Wales University and experience in up close and personal hospitality makes him the ideal fit for the position. Johnson in the statement said: “I am grateful and honored to be given the opportunity to perform in this role for the island of Middle Caicos, a premier outer island destination in the TCI. RBI Parent CEO to Step Down Next Year

first_imgAs Reed Elsevier continues to search for a buyer for its b-to-b publishing arm Reed Business Information, the London-based publisher has begun a second search—for a new CEO.Sir Crispin Davis, who has held the post as Reed CEO for nearly a decade, is planning to step down next year, according to a report in the Times of London. The company has hired a recruiter to help consider internal and external replacement candidates. The change in command comes a little more than four months after Reed announced its plans to divest RBI, as part of the company’s preliminary financial results statement for 2007 which it released in February. Since then, groups like Apax Partners, Permira, Providence Equity Partners and Cinven have been floated as possible suitors. Early estimates put a sale at about $2 billion. To help assure that RBI sells in one piece, Reed put together a group of banks to lend nearly $1.5 billion to the eventual buyer. The sale, however, faces steep hurdles due mostly to the soft economy.RBI publishes a number of trade magazines including Variety and Publishers Weekly. Early last month, RBI eliminated 41 jobs as part of a company-wide restructuring effort.last_img read more

Measuring Effectiveness of Base Closure Could Support DODs Case for New Rounds

first_imgThe Pentagon’s case for conducting a new round of base closures could be stronger if it had measured whether the goals of the 2005 round of base closures — reducing excess infrastructure, transforming the military and promoting jointness — were achieved, according to a recent report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO). Instead officials from DOD and the services tracked their progress completing the BRAC Commission’s recommendations by the September 2011 statutory deadline and measured the cost savings associated with them. The congressional watchdog agency found that the department did not have the necessary data to calculate how much excess infrastructure was disposed of during the 2005 round. With no way to evaluate whether the last BRAC round achieved its goals, DOD cannot demonstrate whether the services’ realignment and closure actions improved their efficiency and effectiveness, preventing it from showing Congress that the benefits of a future BRAC round would outweigh the upfront implementation costs, the agency said.In March 2013, GAO recommended that “in the event of any future BRAC round, DOD identify appropriate measures of effectiveness and develop a plan to demonstrate the extent to which the department achieved the results intended from the implementation of the BRAC round.” But DOD opposed the recommendation, stating that military value should be the primary driver for BRAC. In the new report, GAO calls for Congress to “consider, in any future BRAC authorization, a requirement for DOD to identify appropriate measures of effectiveness and to track the achievement of its goals.”DOD opposed that recommendation as well, stating it would “subvert the statutory requirement that military value be the priority consideration,” according to the report. Its recommendation does not, however, undermine the department’s reliance on military value as the primary selection criteria for its candidate BRAC recommendations, GAO notes.“If Congress would like to increase its oversight for any future BRAC round, requiring DOD to identify appropriate measures of effectiveness and track achievement of its goals would provide it with improved visibility over the expected outcome,” the agency states. Burned madrasa girls family unhappy over police role

first_imgThe madrasa student from Sonagazi, Feni who was set on fire. File photoOne among the four people who set a madrasa girl on fire in Sonagazi of Feni on 6 April has reportedly been arrested. The accused Shampa is a close relative of Siraj Ud Daula, the principal of the madrasa. The victim’s family had filed a case against him on 27 March alleging sexual abuses. The burned student, who is still in a critical condition, made a ‘dying declaration’ to the physicians at the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being taken into life support. In her statement she said four persons including two women had carried out the attack and one of them was Shampa.Deputy inspector general of police’s Chittagong range, Khandaker Golam Faruque, told the media on Tuesday that they had detained Shampa from Mangalkandi union on 9 April. But the Sonagazi police station said the detainee was Umme Sultana alias Popy. These contradictory statements cast doubts over the arrest of Shampa. While DIG Faruque was asked on the contradiction of the two police statements, he said Popy and Shampa was the same person. The family of the madrasa student said, they could not rely on the local police administration. The police have been trying to hide the actual incident of the attempted murder of the girl and tried to change the case statement as well, they alleged.Family members of the girl at DMCH Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit said that an investigation should be carried out to know whose interest was being served by the Sonagazi police station officer-in-charge Moazzem Hossain. When asked why they cannot trust Moazzem, the victim’s brother told Prothom Alo that the OC on 27 March had termed the case a concocted one, saying the victim had ‘made up a drama’. Their family was constantly being threatened, too, he added.Around one and half hours prior to the attack on his sister, Afsaruddin, an English teacher of the madrasa, threatened the family to withdraw the case, said the brother.Thirty hours after the incident, the OC told the media that there would be investigation to know if this was a suicide attempt or a murder attempt. The victim’s family members also said that Iqbal Ahmed, a sub-inspector of Sonagazi police station, took an interview of the victim on 6 April taking permission from the physicians of DMCH Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit. He recorded the interview and let them listen to it.But on Tuesday, it was discovered that the statement in which police took the signature of the victim’s brother had some information missing. The incident of tying the girl up before setting her on fire and the names of several crucial defendants were omitted. In the first statement, nine were named excluding the principal and including four anonymous women. Later at the protest of the victim’s family, councilor of Sonagazi municipality No. 4, Maqsud Alam, an alim student of the madrasa, Jobayer Ahmed, and hafez of madrasa owned hefezkhana, hafez Abdul Quader, were named.Several inhabitants of the area said the police station sent them messages asking not to join in any demonstration against the principal. The OC Moazzem Hossain, however, denied the allegations stating he never said the girl had tried to commit suicide. When asked, DIG Faruque said there was no scope to neglect such an issue and legal steps would be taken against the responsible ones.Four have been shown arrested and sent to the court of Feni Tuesday. Senior judicial magistrate Sharaf Uddin granted five-day remand for each of the four — Nur Hossain, Kefayet Ullah, Saidul Islam and Alauddin — all of whom are known as the principal’s men.According to sources in police, during an interrogation the detained madrasa office assistant Nurul Amin revealed that another allegation of sexual abuse was brought against the principal earlier, but the issue got lost after a probe committee was formed. The principal called in three girl students to his office on 27 March. One among them was allowed to enter the room. As the principal pressed calling bell after some time, the assistant went on and found the girl (who was later set on fire) sitting on the floor leaning her head down. As he took her out of the room, she started crying seeing her two friends.Sonagazi union council chairman Shamsul Arefin said the attack on the girl was premeditated and added the principal has a group of cadres who were involved in the incident. The physicians at DMCH carried out a surgery on the madrasa girl on Tuesday to make her lungs functional.”We have conducted the operation keeping her on life support,” Brigadier General Nasir Uddin, a director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), told newsmen at the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of DMCH on Tuesday.Nasir Uddin said the burned girl is facing a number of complications. Alongside blood and lung infection, she has developed problems in her kidney.Quoting Singapore physicians, he said she could not be taken abroad for treatment in such a critical condition. A group of physicians from Singapore General Hospital are due in Dhaka on 14 April on a pre-scheduled programme. They will visit the girl at that time.[Prothom Alo’s Sonagazi correspondent also contributed to this report]last_img read more

Cardinal Pell is mentioned as an example of this syndrome, along with others, and Pell’s outspoken opposition against Australia’s gay marriage initiative a few years ago is only the most recent example of his public record of homophobia; proving once again that William Shakespeare was right when he wrote centuries ago, “the lady doth protest too much methinks.” Ben in Oakland says: Ben in Oakland says: Joseph Jaglowicz says: March 13, 2019 at 2:13 pm Sexually victimizing children is not normal adult sexuality. Pell is just one more example a Catholic priest while being on the hunt so that he could molest small boys, big boys, anyone he could his hands on, as are a whole cohort of catholic priests. I agree with you, it’s despicable, disgusting, and ought to be punished. What I don’t agree with you about, which you conveniently ignored in favor of changing the subject, that this has the slightest thing to do with gay men such as myself, my husband, my hundreds of friends and the thousands I have known or the gay community in general. Some of these cases are pedophiles. All of them are men, not just some of them. all of them are faithless, not just some of them. all of them have sexual issues, not just some of them. You got to live with this for years, face your accuser in court, let the entire world know what happened to you.But now, let’s break from all of these wonderful plans god has for you, and you, and you, and you, and get to the REAL tragedy here. From the same news story: “The question now is what will happen to the Catholic Church, especially in Australia, where he presided. The sex abuse scandal has clearly had an impact on churchgoers. “It’s been disastrous,” said Dr. Peter Wilkinson, a former Catholic priest and researcher in Melbourne, where Cardinal Pell served as the archbishop. “I’d say we’ve lost about two, possibly three generations of young people, and now I think the situation is worsening. The older generation is following the young.”The real question is this: why are the people who are not leaving remaining in this church? Why are they giving it money, defending the church by claiming this whole thing is a scam, a deflection, an attack by Satan, a plot by Gay Central, anything but what is obvious? And what about those public school teachers, eh? and Terry Bean, eh? And Jussie Smollett, eh? WHAT ABOUT THEM? But not what about Jabba the Trump. Here is what we actually know. After tens of thousands of victims, mostly underaged boys and under 14 have come forward or been discovered in “the records of the church”, all the deflection in the world is not going to change the fact that the public knows it is not unusual for Catholic priests to have sexual relations with children, adolescent boys, girls, and adults in their charge— often times without even legal consent, let alone moral consent. Not to mention, thanks to Daddy McCarrick, EACH OTHER! In short, pretty much anything that moves, and has no more than two legs. Facebook Twitter Pinterest LinkedIn ReddIt Email,MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — The most senior Catholic convicted of child sex abuse was sentenced Wednesday (March 13) to six years in prison for molesting two choirboys in an Australian cathedral in a crime the judge said showed “staggering arrogance.”Cardinal George Pell must serve a minimum of three years and eight months before he is eligible for parole, according to the judge’s order. The five convictions against Pell carried a maximum possible sentence of 10 years each.“In my view, your conduct was permeated by staggering arrogance,” Victoria state County Court Chief Judge Peter Kidd said in handing down the sentence.Pope Francis’ former finance minister was convicted by a unanimous jury verdict in December of orally raping a 13-year-old choirboy and indecently dealing with the boy and the boy’s 13-year-old friend in the late 1990s, months after Pell became archbishop of Melbourne. A court order had suppressed media reporting the news until last month. The 77-year-old denies the allegations and will appeal his convictions in the Victoria Court of Appeal on June 5. It was not immediately clear if he will also appeal the sentence. For the first time in Pell’s many court appearances since he returned to Australia from the Vatican to face abuse charges, Pell wore an open-necked shirt without a cleric’s collar. He was also not wearing a cardinal’s gold ring, which might reflect strict rules on jewelry in the state penal system. In explaining his sentencing decision, the judge said Pell had led an “otherwise blameless life.” Kidd said he believed given Pell’s age and lack of any other criminal record, the cardinal posed no risk of re-offending.The judge also took pains to note that he was sentencing Pell for the offenses on which the cardinal had been convicted — and not for the sins of the Catholic Church.“As I directed the jury who convicted you in this trial, you are not to be made a scapegoat for any failings or perceived failings of the Catholic Church,” Kidd said. But the judge also said that Pell had abused his position of power and had shown no remorse for his crimes. Kidd described the assaults as egregious, degrading and humiliating to the victims.Pell showed no emotion during the hourlong hearing and barely moved throughout. He stood silently with his hands behind his back as the judge read his sentence. Pell signed documents that registered him for life as a serious sexual offender before he was led from the dock by four prison officers. In a statement, one of Pell’s victims called the judge’s sentence “meticulous and considered.”“It is hard for me to allow myself to feel the gravity of this moment, the moment when the sentence is handed down, the moment when justice is done,” the man said in a statement read outside court by one of his lawyers, Vivian Waller. “It is hard for me, for the time being, to take comfort in this outcome. I appreciate that the court has acknowledged what was inflicted upon me as a child. However, there is no rest for me. Everything is overshadowed by the forthcoming appeal.”The father of one of Pell’s victims who died of a heroin overdose in 2014 at the age of 31 paid tribute to his son’s childhood friend for speaking out.“I commend the young fellow who has come forward,” the father said. “He kept it in for a long time and that would’ve been hell for him. Absolute hell.”The father said he was “really appreciative and thankful that he did come forward.”“I want to give him a hug. He was a fabulous little kid. He’s a fabulous man now,” the father said. The father also described the sentence as “a disappointment.”The father is considering suing Pell and the church over the abuse.Australian law prohibits the publication of sex crime victims’ identities, so the father also cannot be identified.Abuse victims’ groups also expressed disappointment that the punishment was not harsher. The sentence “makes a mockery of the concept of true accountability and is not a sentence commensurate with the crimes committed and the harm reaped,” Blue Knot Foundation president Cathy Kezelman said in a statement.SNAP, a U.S. support group for victim of clergy abuse, described the sentences as “comparatively light.”“We hope that the sentence imposed on Cardinal George Pell will provide some measure of healing to the living survivor of his abuse and comfort and closure for the family of Pell’s non-surviving victim,” SNAP said in a statement. The judge said Pell’s age was a significant factor in determining his sentence.Pell suffers from hypertension that is exacerbated by stress and has a dual-chamber pacemaker, the judge said.Pell used a cane to leave the court, after having both knees surgically replaced in December. His sentencing comes on the sixth anniversary of Francis’ election as pope. Pell was in the conclave that elected Francis and remains eligible for any potential future conclave until age 80 or unless he is removed.Asked by a reporter outside court after the sentencing whether the case against Pell amounted to a witch hunt, his lawyer Robert Richter gave a rueful smile.“No comment — you be the judge,” Richter replied. After centuries of impunity, cardinals from Australia to Chile and points in between are facing justice in both the Vatican and government courts for their own sexual misdeeds or for having shielded abusers under their watch.Last week, France’s senior Catholic cleric, Cardinal Philippe Barbarin, was convicted of failing to report a known pedophile priest to police. Barbarin was given a six-month suspended sentence.Pope Francis last month defrocked the onetime leader of the American church after an internal investigation determined Cardinal Theodore McCarrick sexually molested children and adult men. It was the first time a cardinal had been defrocked over the child abuse scandal. The surviving victim made a statement against Pell in 2015 — a year after the other victim’s death — to a police task force set up to investigate allegations that arose from a state parliamentary inquiry into handling of child abuse by religious and other nongovernment organizations. The task force also investigates allegations made to a similar national inquiry, called the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.Pell gave evidence by video link from Rome to the royal commission, the nation’s highest level of inquiry, in 2016 about his time as a church leader in Melbourne and in his hometown of Ballarat. The four-year royal commission found in its 2017 report that the Melbourne Archdiocese had ignored or covered up allegations of child abuse by seven priests in a bid to protect the church’s reputation and avoid scandal. The royal commission was critical of Pell’s predecessor in Melbourne, Archbishop Frank Little, who died in 2008. It made no findings against Pell, saying in a redacted report that it would not publish information that could “prejudice current or future criminal or civil proceedings.”Australian police interviewed Pell about the survivor’s allegations in a Rome hotel in 2016. Pell described the allegations at the time as “vile and disgusting conduct” that went against everything he believed in.Pell voluntarily returned to Australia in 2017 to face an array of child abuse charges, most of which have since been dropped. The full details of those allegations were suppressed by court orders.Pell was once the highest-ranking Catholic in Australia’s second-largest city, where he is now a prisoner held in protective security. Pedophiles such as Pell are typically separated from the main prison populations in Australia.Pell was 55 years old and had recently established a compensation plan for Melbourne’s victims of clergy abuse when he abused the two boys at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in 1996. The survivor testified that Pell had walked in on the boys swigging altar wine in a back room after a Sunday Mass. The judge rejected Richter’s submission that no person thinking rationally would molest two 13-year-old boys in a cathedral sacristy after a Mass with the doors open.“To offend in such a risky and brazen manner, I infer that, for whatever reason, you were in fact prepared to take on such risks. I conclude that your decision to offend was a reasoned, albeit perverted one,” Kidd said.More than a month later, Pell abused the survivor again, squeezing the boy’s genitals as they passed in a cathedral corridor after a Mass. The judge said the assault was committed with “a degree of physical aggression and venom.”(Associated Press writer Kristen Gelineau in Sydney contributed to this report.) To Prevent Drunk Driving Deaths TxDOT Says Plan While You Can

first_img Share Listen – / 4For years now, Harris County has had some of the highest DWI fatality rates in the country. Allison Bainbridge with the DA’s office says a lot of it has to do with Harris County’s large size and growing population. “But it really comes down to someone’s individual choice,” adds Bainbridge. “Someone’s going to make a bad decision to drink and drive, something bad is going to happen.”Eric Stephens knows all too well what can happen. His daughter Jade was killed in a drunk driving crash in July of 2014. The family was driving home from Jade’s 10th birthday party when they were hit by a drunk driver in north Harris County. “You don’t understand how it is when you can’t get out of your head your baby dying in your wife’s arms,” says Stephens. To try to keep the roads safe this holiday season, many local law enforcement departments are conducting “no refusal” efforts. If someone suspected of DWI refuses to take a breath test, police can get an immediate search warrant for a blood draw.TxDOT has also rolled out an interactive video game to illustrate the dangers of impaired driving. Players have to dodge snowballs while under the influence of “digital” drinks.  00:00 /00:56 X To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code:last_img read more

Speaking before Houston City Council, Mayor Turner says anyone who is still struggling to recover should reach out for assistance.“If there are any questions that people have, or if they’re trying to access the help, let me still encourage them to do 2-1-1,” said Turner. “They are expecting more calls to come in and they have ramped up accordingly.”Turner added that the funding distribution was based on a study by the Kinder Institute, which looked at numbers from FEMA to determine the areas of greatest need.“We recognize there are people who are low-income families, individuals, they need the help,” said Turner. “At the same time this storm impacted people who are middle-income families, middle-class families. They lost pretty much all that they had. They exhausted their savings and they need the help.”A list of non-profit organizations that are receiving the $28.9 million and more details on the funding is available at this website. 00:00 /01:04 Listen center_img To embed this piece of audio in your site, please use this code: Al Ortiz | Houston Public MediaHouston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett have announced a second round of financial aid from the Hurricane Harvey Relief Fund. With Help Of Two Texas Holdouts Lawmakers On Cusp Of Bypassing Paul

first_imgShelby Knowles/Douglas Young for the Texas TribuneU.S. Reps. Filemon Vela, D-Brownsville, and Vincente Gonzalez, D-McAllen.Thanks to the support of two Texas Democrats, a bipartisan coalition of members of the U.S. House is on the cusp of bypassing House Speaker Paul Ryan and moving major immigration bills to the chamber’s floor. On Tuesday morning, two Democrats who represent the Texas border – U.S. Reps. Vicente Gonzalez of McAllen and Filemon Vela of Brownsville – announced they would sign onto an arcane legislative petition that was originally spearheaded by another border member, U.S. Rep. Will Hurd, a Republican from Helotes.Last month, Hurd and a handful of other House Republicans, frustrated by the lack of movement on immigration, initiated an obscure legislative tactic called a discharge petition in an attempt to bypass their chamber’s committees and House GOP leadership. The petition would force a series of votes on several bills that address immigration issues, including the legal status of “Dreamers” — young undocumented immigrants who came to the country as minors and have been granted reprieve from deportation and two-year work permits under the Obama-era Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program. The discharge petition quickly gained dozens of backers, including most House Democrats. Three Texas Democrats representing the border – Gonzalez, Vela and U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar of Laredo – withheld their support from the petition, citing concerns that it could lead to legislation passing that would clear the way for the constuction of a border wall. Cuellar has not changed his position. With Vela and Gonzalez signing on, the petition’s tally grows to 215 names, just three short of the 218 needed to force votes on the U.S. House floor. Hurd is the only Texas Republican to sign on.“By signing this discharge petition, I do so with the intent of giving 800,000 young people – young Americans – peace of mind and the ability to remain in the only country they call home,” said Gonzalez. “Let me be clear, I will not accept a DACA fix that includes border wall funding. It’s unfortunate that we are at this nexus, but the ball is now in the Republicans’ court. And as such, I ask them: ‘What will be your next move?’”“In consultation with Dreamers and their parents, clergy, and Bishop Daniel Flores, I have decided to sign the discharge petition so that Dreamers can get the vote they are requesting,” Vela concurred. “I will vote for a clean Dream Act, but not for any measure that includes border wall funding. Republican moderates claim they have the votes to move their discharge petition forward… Let’s see it.”The initial group pushing for the the petition was made up of just Republicans – mostly members like Hurd, who are from diverse districts and are in tough re-election battles, and other Republicans who are retiring. In the following weeks, most members of the Democratic caucus followed suit and signed the petition, allowing the coalition to close in on a majority of the chamber.Capitol Hill is bracing for a conservative backlash to the tactic. Immigration is the most contentious issue within the GOP conference and a floor vote on these measures – which include a hardline approach to Democratic-favored policies – is sure to pit the conservative wing of the House Republican conference, known as the Freedom Caucus, against members like Hurd. That’s put the chamber’s Republican leadership in the crosshairs of a deeply divided conference. GOP members are scheduled to meet Thursday morning to address the issue. Sharelast_img read more

An alloptical neural network on a single chip

first_imgA team of researchers from the University of Münster, the University of Oxford and the University of Exeter has built an all-optical neural network on a single chip. In their paper published in the journal Nature, the group describes their chip, which has no optical-to-electronic conversions, and how well it worked. Geoffrey Burr with IBM Research – Almaden has published a News and Views piece discussing the work by the team in the same journal issue. More information: J. Feldmann et al. All-optical spiking neurosynaptic networks with self-learning capabilities, Nature (2019). DOI: 10.1038/s41586-019-1157-8Press release Modern computers run on electricity—it powers devices and serves as a storage and data medium. But for several decades, scientists have wondered if it might be possible to use light as the data medium—crunching photons instead of electrons. Engineers have many hurdles in attempting to create such a device, however, most prominently the bottlenecks that arise when converting between optical and electrical systems. In more recent times, there has been a renewed interest in building an optically based computer—but now, the focus is energy conservation. Big modern computers used for heavy-duty applications require a lot of electricity. Logic suggests that computers based on light should be less energy intensive, most particularly because they would not generate as much heat, making cooling systems obsolete. In this new effort, the researchers have taken a step toward the creation of optically based computers by building an all-optical neural network on a single chip. The researchers noted that one type of computer system seemed most amenable to optics—deep neural networks. This is because such networks rely on artificial neurons with synaptic connections that can be weighted based on past learning experiences. They noted also that crystalline phase change materials could also serve such a purpose. They are materials that experience a change in structure when heated—in this case, by a laser. Using such a material, the team built a chip with four neurons connected with 60 synapses using waveguides to control the flow of information represented by light. Testing showed the chip was capable of learning, recognizing patterns and performing computations. Jean Marcs living books

first_imgImagine an exhibition that inspires you to pick up a book and read. Opening at the Alliance Francaise on September 20 is Jean-Marc Godes enchanting exhibition. Inspired by the world of Jacques Prévert, Jean-Marc Godès is a photographer who specializes in the images of books as an instrument for reading. For ten years, his photographs have been exhibited all over the world: from France to Guinea, through Ireland, Canada, Lithuania, China, and Portugal. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfBorn in Guadalupe but a citizen of the world, Godès has focused on the universe of books as a form of homage to both his father – who was a writer – and poet Jacques Prévert. He describes himself as ‘director of still images’. In fact, each scene depicting the living books in action is carefully staged before taking the picture so that we get a series of stunning still lifes with a modernist message. The artist’s tireless work is inspired by the passionate belief in the power of books intended as a living organism carrying personal and collective histories. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveIn an interview, Godes says: “As a visual photographer, director of still image, I realise an artistic work dedicated to the promotion of the book and writings. My approach is part of a photo-poetic perspective. My objective, by challenging the imagination, is to arouse the desire to continue or go back the course of ephemeral stories that I tell, the time of a freeze frame, the time of a photograph. The singularity of my artistic research is to question norms by producing staged photographs located on either side of the borders of reality.” “The subject of my representations is the book object, in various forms. Living books, escaped books, they are the memory and the vehicle of our personal and collective stories, of our identities as well as the words and the desire of the “other” lying on a paper box. Libraries and centuries are abolished for the benefit of a fluidity of space and time. The heart of the book, from image to image, without noise.”All of Godès’ mises en scène are pervaded by a sort of magic realism. His photo-poetic celebration of books calls for interpretation of simple things in troubled times. At times they trigger the need to ‘decode’ the situation behind them but each image is an equivocal lesson in learning and the beauty of books that runs as a thread through the universe. Advocating a poetics of the image, he does not impose a pre-established meaning by its author. His images become universally accessible because he gives us a variety of interpretations through human cultures.”In a world dominated by the image, by a gallery of portraits, along a dreamlike journey, I build uncertain worlds that participate in the reading of reality. At the crossroads of photography, literature, and poetry, my digital constructions are a tribute to the music of time and the colours of life,” adds Godes.Godes unites borders of the real and the imaginary, he piques the interest of audiences of all ages. His photographs arouse strong desires to continue the course of stories that are stopping on the images. Starting from these moments suspended in time, each image is like an educational echo. Evocative elegance flows out from these images. My favourite is the mountain sheep and master looking at the pages of a book. Indeed a book is the window to a world. At the crossroads of art, photography, poetry, and literature, the social and cultural utility of Godes photographs underline and affirm the importance of literacy.last_img read more

The Nordic markets have among the highest uptake o

first_imgThe Nordic markets have among the highest uptake of SVOD services in Europe, but Netflix is struggling, new research has revealed. According to industry expert Ampere Analysis, the average market share of Netflix in the region is just 49%, compared to an average of 71% in the rest of Western Europe.Local players like Viaplay, TV2 Play, C More and the regional version of HBO account for the majority of streaming service contracts in the region. In every other Western European market except Germany, Italy and Spain, Netflix claims the majority of SVoD subscriptions. The Nordic flair for noir is reflected by the analysis of content currently in production or development (but not yet completed or aired) in the region. According to Ampere, 47% of all shows are crime or thrillers. Although the local linear channels and broadcasters have far more shows in development than local streaming players (59 different shows versus 23 from streaming players), an even greater proportion are crime. More than half (52%) of all shows in production for linear channels are crime compared to just 39% for streaming players, suggesting that international services are not doing enough to cater to the crime-hungry audience.Elinor Clark, analyst at Ampere Analysis said: “The Nordic countries are home to the most dynamic streaming TV markets in Europe and local players have had to deal with a rapid transition of TV viewers to streaming services. “Content is now the key battleground and, while Nordic Noir has served the region well, there is indication that local players will now look to develop comedy and period drama as the next big push.”last_img read more

Microbes causing cystic fibrosis change rapidly within 23 years after first infection

first_imgReviewed by James Ives, M.Psych. (Editor)Mar 5 2019A new study, recently published in Nature Communications, has looked at infections in Danish youth with CF over a period of 10 years. This is the largest longitudinal study to date of the evolution – both involving traits and genes – of the disease-causing microbes that persistently infect young CF-patients.CF-patients have a genetic defect which results in dehydrated sticky mucus in the lungs, leading to severe and persistent lung infections often caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The research shows that within the first two to three years after infection with P. aeruginosa, the bacteria are already adapting rapidly to the environment, growing slower and optimizing their fitness to survive.”Across all of our patients within the first three years, the bacteria on average slow their growth rates significantly and they reduce their susceptibility to ciprofloxacin, a first line drug in treatment of CF-patients. This means that one should pay extra close attention in this period of time to avoid the infection becoming persistent,” says Jennifer Bartell, Postdoc at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain) and co-first author.Looking beyond antibiotic resistanceClinicians usually focus on detecting antibiotic resistance during infections, and this appears to be an effective way to follow the development of short-term acute infections.Antibiotic resistant bacteria are identified by their ability to survive above a specific concentration of an antibiotic. The researchers saw a rapid increase in the concentration of antibiotics that the bacteria could tolerate. But at the same time, few bacteria achieved detectable antibiotic resistance in the early infection period of CF. The researchers suspect this pre-resistance adaptation to be an underused marker of progression in the infection. This pre-resistance adaptation likely occurs in other persistent infections, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).Besides looking for antibiotic resistance, clinicians also monitor bacterial mucoidity – a trait where bacteria produce a protective, slimy coating, as a marker of a chronic infection. But according to the new study, bacteria can become persistent and resilient to treatment regardless of the appearance of mucoidity. Other bacterial traits such as the ability to attach to surfaces and aggregate in biofilms – hefty structured layers of adherent cells – evolve more consistently in these persisting infections than mucoidity and may serve as a better sign of early chronic infection.Related StoriesHinge-like protein may unlock new pathways for cystic fibrosis treatmentBritish teenager with life-threatening infection successfully treated with phage therapyHuman pancreas on a chip could help identify possible cause of CF-Related Diabetes”We can see which traits might actually be valuable for the clinicians to monitor in addition to antibiotic resistance,” says Lea Sommer, Postdoc at Rigshospitalet and co-first author.Potential for new diagnostic toolsThe researchers identified these important evolving traits of P. aeruginosa by screening 443 isolates from 39 young cystic fibrosis (CF) patients over a ten-year period and mapping traits adapting in tandem using statistical modeling approaches. Usually, studies focus on bacterial isolates collected from older CF-patients with chronic infections, who have become multi-drug resistant and already have adapted to the human lungs. These results emphasize that trait evolution measurements are important and should not be neglected, even though genomic tests are advancing.”In this early phase, the bacteria change a lot and become much more robust, but the doctors do not necessarily see this with current clinical measurements,” says Lea Sommer.Going forward, the researchers wish to find out how the adapting bacteria respond to a larger panel of antibiotics that are used to treat patients. Armed with this comprehensive map of evolutionary pathways, clinicians would have a much better chance of categorizing the infection and, hence, take the necessary precautionary steps.”In the clinic, doctors would potentially be able to take a single patient’s bacterial screening data and analyze how this patient responds to the current treatment. As we gain experience with more patients, it will be easier to assess what can be done to stop the transition to chronic infection, “says Jennifer Bartell. Thus, this could pave the way for developing more fine-tuned personalized treatments for all patients suffering from continuous persisting infections, such as CF, COPD, and perhaps diabetics with chronically infected wounds.Source: read more

We have no reason to believe this was associated with any unauthorised access or malicious event.” A spokesman told AFP earlier it was not possible to say how many Visa users across Europe had been affected.Visa users took to social media to complain and banks tried to explain the situation their customers.HSBC bank’s UK Twitter account earlier said: “From what we understand there are still intermittent issues but services are slowly recovering.”Paymentsense, which provides card machines, online payment gateways and virtual terminals to some 60,000 independent businesses in Britain and Ireland, advised users to try paying via contactless transactions.”We have been informed that Visa has corrected the outage and transactions are now starting to go through. There is still some intermittency however, we believe this is due to a backlog of transactions,” it said.”We now understand that contactless transactions have a better chance of going through.”It is understood the Bank of England is aware of the issue and is in touch with Visa. The Royal Bank of Scotland’s Twitter help account said cash machine withdrawals were unaffected.”This is an industry wide issue which is being investigated as a matter of urgency and we apologise for any inconvenience. ATM and MasterCard transactions are not impacted,” it said.Queues in shopsIn a Primark store on Berlin’s Alexanderplatz, frustrated customers were queueing for 20 minutes to pay. Staff did not know why transactions were not going through. However, in the neighbouring store, transactions were being processed without any problems.Sandra Foy, who owns a bookshop in Manchester, northwest England, told Sky News television: “I run a small business and the loss of any business is a big deal for us.”Not knowing when this is going to be sorted out is incredibly frustrating.”The BBC posted a picture of a London supermarket worker standing outside holding a sign reading: “cash only”.It cited Elle Gibbs-Murray, from Bridgend in south Wales, as saying she was stuck in traffic on the Severn Bridge between England and Wales for 45 minutes as drivers were unable to pay the toll by card.Alex Neill, Which? consumer magazine’s managing director of home products and services, said: “Clearly this issue will be a huge inconvenience to customers and it must be resolved urgently. Visa and the banks need to ensure no-one is left out of pocket due to this outage.”We strongly advise people to keep any evidence of extra expenses they’ve incurred in order to claim them back.” Payment systems giant Visa said late Friday it was “operating at close to normal levels” after a hardware failure left it struggling to process transactions in Europe. US auto workers at VW plant reject bid to unionize

Explore further The UAW has never managed to fully organize a US plant owned by a foreign manufacturer and a win at the German carmaker’s Chattanooga facility would have been a significant victory. But the 1,700-strong workforce at the factory rejected the move by a margin of 833-776 in a ballot that concluded Friday. The organizing effort was attacked by state Republicans and hampered by an ongoing federal corruption probe, with a former vice president of the auto union soon to be sentenced after pleading guilty to misappropriating funds.”Pending certification of the results by the National Labor Relations Board and a legal review of the election, Volkswagen will respect the decision of the majority,” said the carmaker’s Chattanooga plant chief Frank Fischer. “We look forward to continuing our close cooperation with elected officials and business leaders in Tennessee.”UAW organizing director Tracy Romero said the company had engineered a defeat in the vote through “fear and misinformation.””Over a period of nine weeks—an unprecedented length of time due to legal gamesmanship —Volkswagen was able to break the will of enough workers to destroy their majority,” she added.A 2014 vote to organize the factory was defeated by a 53-47 percent margin after stiff opposition from local politicians, who warned that a UAW victory would make it harder to attract new jobs to Tennessee.A smaller ballot of 160 skilled workers at the plant passed by a wide margin the next year, but Volkswagen challenged the result. Political interference and the current state of US labor laws contributed to Friday’s defeat, UAW spokesman Brian Rothenberg said.”This is a system designed to benefit corporate lawyers, not protect worker rights,” he added.last_img read more

Why JFK Believed His Bold Moonshot Could Actually Happen

Apollo 11 was truly a giant leap, but it was no miracle. On May 25, 1961, President John F. Kennedy announced before a special session of Congress that the United States planned to put people on the moon, and return them safely to Earth, before the end of the decade. At the time, the nation had a mere 15 minutes of human-spaceflight experience — and that had been accrued just three weeks earlier, when NASA launched astronaut Alan Shepard on a brief jaunt to suborbital space. Still, JFK had confidence that the agency could deliver on his bold promise.Advertisement Related: Apollo 11’s 50th Anniversary: Complete Coverage “I think he thought it could happen,” said Roger Launius, who served as NASA’s chief historian from 1990 to 2002 and wrote the recently published book “Apollo’s Legacy” (Smithsonian Books, 2019). In 1959, just a year after it was established, the space agency had identified Mars as the long-term target for its human-spaceflight program, according to space policy expert John Logsdon. By early 1961, quick-and-dirty analyses had convinced the agency that, while a crewed Red Planet mission would be tough and require significant innovation, there were no technological showstoppers that would prevent it from happening. “That formed the basis of NASA telling Kennedy, ‘If you commit the resources, Mr. President, we think we can do it [a crewed lunar landing],” Logsdon, a professor emeritus of political science and international affairs at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs in Washington, D.C., told “So, the NASA leadership had a relatively high degree of confidence in the basic doability of a lunar-landing program, even though the way they thought it would happen at the time was not the way it happened,” he added. Getting the money, of course, was a big part of pulling the moonshot off. And JFK had a big advantage there: his vice president was Lyndon Johnson, a former majority leader of the U.S. Senate with a long history of pulling strings on Capitol Hill. (Robert Caro’s famous biography of Johnson is called “Master of the Senate.”) The 1969 goal “was doable, and, politically, Johnson had Congress lined up to support it,” Launius told A large part of that support, of course, was rooted in a desire to best the United States’ Cold War rival, the Soviet Union. JFK’s announcement came just six weeks after the Soviets had pulled off the first-ever human spaceflight, launching Yuri Gagarin on an orbital mission (something the U.S. wouldn’t achieve until February 1962). Gagarin’s flight was the second high-profile space race victory for the U.S.S.R., which launched the first satellite, Sputnik 1, in October 1957. “In general, Kennedy felt great pressure to have the United States ‘catch up to and overtake’ the Soviet Union in the ‘space race,'” officials with the NASA history office wrote in a description of the moonshot announcement. (The May 1961 address to Congress, by the way, does not contain the line about choosing to go to the moon because it is hard. JFK said that in another speech, in September 1962 at Rice University in Houston.) Conversations with NASA chief James Webb and others convinced JFK that the U.S. perhaps had a lead over the Soviets in the nascent moon race, despite these prior setbacks, the NASA historians added. And that proved to be the case. NASA notched milestone after milestone in a stepwise fashion, working up to Apollo via the Mercury and Gemini human-spaceflight programs. The Soviets continued to beat the U.S. to the punch through the mid-1960s. For example, cosmonaut Alexei Leonov performed the first-ever spacewalk in March 1965, three months before NASA’s Ed White ventured outside his Gemini capsule. But some of these Soviet firsts were rushed, somewhat smoke-and-mirrors affairs, Launius said, and the U.S.S.R. couldn’t keep it up. The nation shot for the moon and failed; it built a huge moon rocket called the N1 but never launched it successfully. And the United States claimed the greatest space-race victory of all on July 20, 1969, when Neil Armstrong took his first small step on the lunar surface.
