However, in 2014 they had 19 at this stage and still failed to win the title, finishing fourth.Arsenal’s training ground is next to Watford’s in the county of Hertfordshire, just north of London. Indeed, Watford’s HQ was formerly used by the Gunners, but that is where the similarities stop.Newly promoted Watford have had a reasonable start to life back in the Premier League, winning two games, at home to Swansea and at Newcastle, taking them to 12th place.last_img read more

Why People Do & Don’t Use Location Apps (Survey)

first_imgConnecting with people, finding places liked by friends and tracking personal travel habits over time were listed as the primary reasons people who use location based social networks like Facebook Places, Foursquare and Google Latitude do so in a survey published by Portland, Oregon digital marketing firm White Horse. The firm surveyed 437 smartphone owners and found that discounts and gaming were not seen as significant motivators for the use of location services. (Lost in Geolocation: Why Consumers Haven’t Bought it and How Marketers Can Fix It)56% of smartphone owners surveyed said they knew about these services and 39% of respondents said they used them. Facebook Places was the clear leader among users (42%) with Latitude (27%) and Foursquare (25%) tied somewhere behind. The biggest barriers to use among non-users? A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… marshall kirkpatrick The White Horse survey includes 11 other charts and graphs and a number of recommendations. All of this has to be taken with a grain of salt, of course, because it’s a firm that does web design and marketing as a service. That 39% of respondents surveyed said they knew about and used location based services seems to me a high number, reason to be optimistic, not as the survey’s title says any indication that the sector is broken. None the less (see my disclosure below), the data is quite interesting and the recommendations are thought provoking and well articulated.Included in those recommendations are the following:Companies interested in reaching potential consumers using location based services should build their own, rather than emphasize participation in existing services, because existing services add too little to the core social networking features they duplicate from Facebook, Twitter or the good old fashioned telephone.Companies should seek to fullfil new social functions with location apps, not just communication. That’s already covered. “Marketers will need to posit experiences & goals that make sense for their particular brands to endorse, build appropriate interactions, and test rewards and incentives,” the report says.Build a social media presence first. “…success will depend on engaging those customers who are most active in social media, based on an understanding of their ‘native’ social experiences in existing communities, whether physical or digital. To think that users will adopt a branded geolocation app that is unmoored from existing social experiences is not realistic.”Privacy: “Currently, geolocation apps handle data in ways that consumers can neither understand nor control.”Model after Foursquare but keep an eye on Facebook. I’m not entirely clear on what this recommendation means.Readers interested in the location based social networking use cases and avoidance should check out our coverage including Why We Check In: The Reasons People Use Location-Based Social Networks, 2011: The Year the Check-in Died, Check-ins Are Dead? I would have written about this report whether I had any connection to the company or not (I love this stuff) and probably would have written basically the same post here either way. Arnaut Groeneveld’s equaliser rescues Netherlands against Belgium in friendly

first_imgArnaut Groeneveld scored his first international goal to help Netherlands play out a 1-1 draw against Belgium in a friendly at the King Baudouin Stadium on Tuesday.Dries Mertens volleyed an excellent opener for Belgium after five minutes, but the young Dutch side grew into the game and were level before the break thanks to Groeneveld. It was the first draw in 13 matches for Belgium, who had won 11 of their previous 12 games, the only blemish being the World Cup semi-final loss to eventual champions France in July.It was also a second positive result in four days for the rejuvenated Netherlands, who beat Germany 3-0 in the Nations League on Saturday and showed more signs of progression under coach Ronald Koeman as they came close to another victory.Belgium took the early lead when Eden Hazard’s mazy run into the penalty area saw the ball eventually fall for Mertens, whose powerfully volley crashed into the corner of the net.Mertens almost turned provider shortly afterwards when his cross was headed over the bar by striker Romelu Lukaku, while at the other end Memphis Depay only had Simon Mignolet to beat but fired straight at the Belgium goalkeeper. The Dutch were level after 27 minutes when an incisive breakaway saw Depay provide a low cross for unmarked Groeneveld to score his first Dutch goal in his second international. The visitors had seized the momentum and were unlucky not to take the lead when Quincy Promes struck the post with a shot from the edge of the box, although Hazard should have scored for the hosts soon after when he fired wide from 10 metres.advertisementBelgium coach Roberto Martinez withdrew Hazard, Lukaku and Mertens at halftime and one of the replacements, forward Michy Batshuayi, had two chances just after the break but shot wide and had a header saved by goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen. The second period lacked the intensity of the first as both teams tired but Dutch defender Nathan Ake forced an excellent save from Mignolet with a header from a corner, while Pablo Rosario also missed a headed chance for the visitors.(With inputs from Reuters)last_img read more

NETFLIX ACCUSED OF USING FOOTAGE OF LACMÉGANTIC QUEBEC DISASTER IN BIRD BOX

first_imgAdvertisement Smoke rises from railway cars that were carrying crude oil after derailing in downtown Lac-Mégantic, Que., Saturday, July 6, 2013. (Paul Chiasson/The Canadian Press) Facebook “I don’t know if this is happening all the time, but we are looking for assurances from Netflix that … they are going to remove them,” Morin said in an interview.“You can be sure we are going to follow up on this, and our citizens are on our side.”High school ethics teacher Guillaume Bouchard was watching the most recent season of Travelers on Netflix over the holidays when he noticed something oddly familiar on his screen. Advertisement Advertisement Login/Register With: LEAVE A REPLY Cancel replyLog in to leave a comment In the science-fiction series, a nuclear device had just exploded on the streets of London, but instead of seeing fires ravaging locations in the U.K. capital, Bouchard was looking at orange flames towering over a small town. At the end of the street, a black oil tanker burned in the background.“I thought: No way. No way did they do that,” Bouchard said in an interview. He paused the show and after a quick internet search had his suspicions confirmed. The brief images on Netflix were taken from real-life footage of one of the deadliest disasters in recent Canadian history, when a train carrying crude oil derailed, exploded and killed 47 people in Lac-Mégantic in 2013.“I don’t know anyone who died in Lac-Mégantic,” Bouchard said. “But if I was someone who lost someone close and I was home and I saw this, I don’t know how I would react.”“It wouldn’t be good.”Travelers, created by Canadian Brad Wright, was shot in Vancouver and produced by Peacock Alley Entertainment Inc., originally in association with Netflix and Showcase. Netflix picked up the show as the exclusive distributor for the latest season, the third.Carrie Mudd, president of Toronto-based Peacock Alley Entertainment, said her company acquired the footage from a stock image vendor called Pond 5, which is based in New York City, and they “weren’t aware of its specific source.” A request for comment from Pond 5 was not returned.“We sincerely apologize and had no intention to dishonour the tragic events of 2013,” Mudd said in an email. “We are already working to replace the footage in the show.” As of Tuesday evening, the images were still part of the Travelers episode available for viewing on Netflix Canada.A spokesman for Netflix did not want to be interviewed, but said the company has contacted Peacock Alley Entertainment, and confirmed the images would be removed. When asked by email to confirm Bird Box also used real-life footage from the disaster, the company said it needed time to look into it.Morin said she first heard of the images used on Travelers Monday.“We find that it’s really a lack of respect, to use these images as fiction and entertainment,” she said. “It’s hard enough for our citizens to see these images when they are used normally and respectfully on the news.“Just imagine, to have them used as fiction, as if they were invented.”On Tuesday, a Lac-Mégantic citizen posted images on social media of the movie Bird Box, where in the early moments of the movie, a television newscast used the images for a few seconds to illustrate a town being under attack.Morin said she viewed the footage posted by the citizen. “We see the images (of Lac-Mégantic) clearly,” she said. The Canadian Press viewed the footage in Bird Box, which is identical to amateur video shot immediately after the derailment. The amateur video can be easily found online.Bouchard said he felt it was his “duty as a citizen’” to go public after identifying the Lac-Mégantic content. He said he knows what happened was a mistake, but “it needed to be talked about.”He said he also considers it a teachable moment he can use in his ethics class. “Naturally, I will talk about it one day (in school),” he said.By Giuseppe Valiante | The Canadian Press A day after learning that a science-fiction show on Netflix used actual footage of the Lac-Mégantic rail disaster, the mayor of the Quebec town said she believes images of the tragedy were used in a second Netflix production, Bird Box.Lac-Mégantic Mayor Julie Morin wants the streaming service to take a look at its movie and TV catalogue to make sure no other production is using images of the tragedy as entertainment. Upcoming elections very much important Hasina

first_imgAL president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina presides over a meeting of party’s Parliamentary Board and Awami League Nomination Board for local government elections at her official Ganabhaban residence on Friday. Photo: PIDRuling Bangladesh Awami League president and prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Friday said neither Awami League nor her government wants the Magura or 15 February, 1996-like elections in the country anymore, state news agency BSS reports.”We don’t want to see Magura or 15 February, 1996 type elections in which BNP rigged votes,” said Hasina while talking to the nomination seekers for elections to three city corporations, 10 union elections, three upazila elections and five municipality elections after a joint meeting of Awami League Parliamentary Board and Awami League Nomination Board for local government elections at her official residence Ganabhaban.Sheikh Hasina said the upcoming elections are very much important for the government as the national election is approaching fast.”Naturally, these elections are very much important for us… There’s win and loss in elections; make sure these don’t tarnish Awami League’s image; work together so that we could serve people,” she said.Sheikh Hasina, also the chief of the ruling party, said the city corporation elections are vital and all have to work for the nominated candidates of the party.”It’s very much important to gain the trust and confidence of voters.”She mentioned that all will have to abide by the decisions of the party and there should not be any intra-party feud during the elections.More than 6,000 elections were held in the country under the Awami League tenure and BNP could not prove any allegation against these elections, Hasina said. The AL president said the drive against militancy, terrorism and drugs is going on and it will continue.”We want to establish Bangladesh as a peaceful country.”She called on the party leaders and activists to inform the voters about the “massive developments” taken place during the tenure of the AL government.”You’ll have to tell the voters that if AL is voted to power again, there’ll be continuation of development,” she added.last_img read more

Burned madrasa girls family unhappy over police role

first_imgThe madrasa student from Sonagazi, Feni who was set on fire. File photoOne among the four people who set a madrasa girl on fire in Sonagazi of Feni on 6 April has reportedly been arrested. The accused Shampa is a close relative of Siraj Ud Daula, the principal of the madrasa. The victim’s family had filed a case against him on 27 March alleging sexual abuses. The burned student, who is still in a critical condition, made a ‘dying declaration’ to the physicians at the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital before being taken into life support. In her statement she said four persons including two women had carried out the attack and one of them was Shampa.Deputy inspector general of police’s Chittagong range, Khandaker Golam Faruque, told the media on Tuesday that they had detained Shampa from Mangalkandi union on 9 April. But the Sonagazi police station said the detainee was Umme Sultana alias Popy. These contradictory statements cast doubts over the arrest of Shampa. While DIG Faruque was asked on the contradiction of the two police statements, he said Popy and Shampa was the same person. The family of the madrasa student said, they could not rely on the local police administration. The police have been trying to hide the actual incident of the attempted murder of the girl and tried to change the case statement as well, they alleged.Family members of the girl at DMCH Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit said that an investigation should be carried out to know whose interest was being served by the Sonagazi police station officer-in-charge Moazzem Hossain. When asked why they cannot trust Moazzem, the victim’s brother told Prothom Alo that the OC on 27 March had termed the case a concocted one, saying the victim had ‘made up a drama’. Their family was constantly being threatened, too, he added.Around one and half hours prior to the attack on his sister, Afsaruddin, an English teacher of the madrasa, threatened the family to withdraw the case, said the brother.Thirty hours after the incident, the OC told the media that there would be investigation to know if this was a suicide attempt or a murder attempt. The victim’s family members also said that Iqbal Ahmed, a sub-inspector of Sonagazi police station, took an interview of the victim on 6 April taking permission from the physicians of DMCH Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit. He recorded the interview and let them listen to it.But on Tuesday, it was discovered that the statement in which police took the signature of the victim’s brother had some information missing. The incident of tying the girl up before setting her on fire and the names of several crucial defendants were omitted. In the first statement, nine were named excluding the principal and including four anonymous women. Later at the protest of the victim’s family, councilor of Sonagazi municipality No. 4, Maqsud Alam, an alim student of the madrasa, Jobayer Ahmed, and hafez of madrasa owned hefezkhana, hafez Abdul Quader, were named.Several inhabitants of the area said the police station sent them messages asking not to join in any demonstration against the principal. The OC Moazzem Hossain, however, denied the allegations stating he never said the girl had tried to commit suicide. When asked, DIG Faruque said there was no scope to neglect such an issue and legal steps would be taken against the responsible ones.Four have been shown arrested and sent to the court of Feni Tuesday. Senior judicial magistrate Sharaf Uddin granted five-day remand for each of the four — Nur Hossain, Kefayet Ullah, Saidul Islam and Alauddin — all of whom are known as the principal’s men.According to sources in police, during an interrogation the detained madrasa office assistant Nurul Amin revealed that another allegation of sexual abuse was brought against the principal earlier, but the issue got lost after a probe committee was formed. The principal called in three girl students to his office on 27 March. One among them was allowed to enter the room. As the principal pressed calling bell after some time, the assistant went on and found the girl (who was later set on fire) sitting on the floor leaning her head down. As he took her out of the room, she started crying seeing her two friends.Sonagazi union council chairman Shamsul Arefin said the attack on the girl was premeditated and added the principal has a group of cadres who were involved in the incident. The physicians at DMCH carried out a surgery on the madrasa girl on Tuesday to make her lungs functional.”We have conducted the operation keeping her on life support,” Brigadier General Nasir Uddin, a director of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH), told newsmen at the Burn and Plastic Surgery Unit of DMCH on Tuesday.Nasir Uddin said the burned girl is facing a number of complications. Alongside blood and lung infection, she has developed problems in her kidney.Quoting Singapore physicians, he said she could not be taken abroad for treatment in such a critical condition. A group of physicians from Singapore General Hospital are due in Dhaka on 14 April on a pre-scheduled programme. They will visit the girl at that time.[Prothom Alo’s Sonagazi correspondent also contributed to this report]last_img read more

Lokayukta Amendment Bill passed Mamata says CM within its purview

first_imgKolkata: The West Bengal Lokayukta (Amendment) Bill 2018 was passed in the state Assembly on Thursday.Clearing misconception, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee clearly explained in the state Assembly that the Chief Minister is not at all out of the purview of Lokayukta, apart from the matters “relating to public order”. She assured that within 10 days after the Bill is signed by the Governor, a former judge will be appointed as Lokayukta.Stating that it is wrongly said that the Chief Minister is not under the purview of Lokayukta, Banerjee said: “the Prime Minister is not under its purview in connection with the matters related to defence, external affairs, internal security and space. In our case, the exemption is broadly related to executive decision and approval in exercise of maintenance of public order, which is understood to include deployment of police forces under the control of the state government, modernisation of police forces and capacity building of the same.” Also Read – Rain batters Kolkata, cripples normal lifeShe maintained in the same breath: “As per the Constitution, there are Centre, State and Concurrent lists and there are 58 subjects under the state list that include matters related to agriculture, land and Panchayat. One must go through the law properly instead of wrongly explaining it.”It may be mentioned that Trinamool Congress MLA Tapas Roy has brought amendments to the provision that “Lokayukta shall investigate any complaint relating to other matters involved in, arising from, or connected with any allegation of corruption against the Chief Minister, with the approval of the state Assembly by a majority of two-third of its members present and voting…” Also Read – Speeding Jaguar crashes into Mercedes car in Kolkata, 2 pedestrians killedShe said: “I have been in politics for so many years and till date, no one has raised question on my credibility. Credibility is my accountability.”ISpeaking on the misconception that Chief Minister will not be under the purview of the Lokayukta, Banerjee said: “There can be discussions on different issues in a democracy, but there cannot be any misconceptions. It is also not right if any group controls the Assembly from outside. After a news is published, it is being told over phone to share the same in the Assembly.” While speaking about the Bill, she said: “We have maintained parity with the Bill that was introduced by the UPA government in 2013 and with that of the erstwhile Left Front government in the state. But it is not exactly a copy of the same.”All MLAs are under the purview of Lokayukta. With the amendment of the Bill, the Parliamentary Affairs minister will also be consulted for appointment of Lokayukta. Earlier, one had to be a Judge of the Supreme Court for appointment as Lokayukta. Now, a High Court judge can be appointed as Lokayukta as well. The Chief Minister attacked the Left Front, saying that their party would have survived if they had taken care of it instead of unnecessarily continuing to criticise her. She took a dig at the party, saying: “Your goraksha friends are buying your party and you cannot do anything.”last_img read more

NotOkGoogle Employeeled town hall reveals hundreds of stories of retaliation at Google

first_imgNote: This article now includes stories of various other Google employees about the retaliation they faced, which they have shared with Google Walkout for real change. Last week, two Google Walkout organizers accused the company of retaliation against them over last year’s Google Walkout protest. The two Google employees, Claire Stapleton, YouTube Marketing Manager and Meredith Whittaker, head of Google’s Open Research were told their roles would change dramatically including calls to abandon AI ethics work, demotion, and more. In regards to this, both women hosted a Retaliation Town Hall to share their stories and strategize this Friday. The event was also live-streamed to other Google offices. 350+ Google staffers attended the Town Hall, where Stapleton said, that after her public sharing of retaliation earlier this week, Google executives tried to undermine her “in emails this week to thousands of my friends and colleagues”. In those emails, Google executives challenged Stapleton’s claim saying that she was “never demoted”. “What’s true is that there was a demotion, and after my lawyers got involved, it was reversed,” Stapleton wrote, in a statement viewed by Wired. Whittaker also provided further updates on the retaliation she faced. She said that her manager told her in late December she would likely need to leave Google’s Cloud division. The same manager told her in March that the “Cloud division was seeking more revenue and that AI Now and her AI ethics work was no longer a fit. This was a strange request because the Cloud unit has a team working on ethical concerns related to AI.” During the March meeting, Whittaker claims her manager also told her that there are “two kinds of people at Google…those who quit, and those who stay and hate every minute of it and try to destroy it. I was taken aback, since my work has always aimed to ensure that Google lived up to its purported values and treated its workforce, and the rest of the world, with respect.” Recently, Google dissolved it’s AI ethics council after nearly 2,600 employees, including Whittaker, signed a petition against the appointment of Kay Cole James, president of the Heritage Foundation. Employees were upset by James’ anti-trans and anti-immigrant political statements. Whittaker also signed the petition protesting Google’s infamous Project Dragonfly, the secretive search engine that Google is allegedly developing which will comply with the Chinese rules of censorship. Meredith Whittaker was also a leader in the anti-Maven movement. Google’s Project Maven, was focused on analyzing drone footage and could have been eventually used to improve drone strikes on the battlefield. More than 3,000 Google employees signed a petition against this project that led to Google deciding not to renew its contract with the U.S. Department of Defense in 2019. In her statement on Friday, Whittaker says that on April 1, a few days before the petition was drafted, she got approval from Jeff Dean to transfer from Cloud to Google’s Research and Machine Intelligence group. Two weeks after the petition was sent, Whittaker claims her transfer was killed. Other Google employees also spoke about employee discontent at Google ranging from the ethics of performing work for the US Department of Defense to the handling of sexual harassment claims. Following the statements of Whittaker and Stapleton in the town hall session, several current and former Googlers took to Twitter to register complaints and share their experiences of facing retaliation from the company. They expressed their disagreement with Google’s policies with the hashtag #NotOkGoogle which was trending on Friday. “This does not seem to be an isolated incident”, Vanessa Harris, Google Product Manager “I am grateful that I quit Google”, Liz Fong-Jones, ex-Googler, current SRE Dev Advocate @honeycombio She also talked about Google’s retaliation against her which forced her to quit. “This is just the tip of the iceberg”, Dr. Alex Hanna, a computational social scientist at Google Cloud Mila Hardt from Google Health division “I emailed @EileenTNaughton later again in November, just after the town hall meeting and her promises for change. I pledged her again to help stop the planned disposal of me. This time she never responded! My last day was after Thanks Giving! Thanks, Google for the gift!”, Vida Vakilotojar, Xoogler The town hall group also published an internal document with a new set of “demands”. The document which was seen by The Guardian includes a “transparent, open investigation of HR and its abysmal handling of employee complaints relating to working conditions, discrimination, harassment, and retaliation”. Other demands include a public response from Google co-founder Larry Page, and that Google meets the demands that were issued in the Google walkout. “Google has had six months to meet [those] demands; in that time, they’ve partially met only one of them,” the document states. “Google seems to have lost its mooring and trust between workers and the company is deeply broken. The company has no clear direction and is just progressing from crisis to crisis lately.” Google did not respond to specific questions about the town hall’s meeting. A spokeswoman said in a statement: “We prohibit retaliation in the workplace and publicly share our very clear policy. To make sure that no complaint raised goes unheard at Google, we give employees multiple channels to report concerns, including anonymously, and investigate all allegations of retaliation.” Other activist and worker groups also rose in solidarity. “The impact @mer__edith has in AI ethics is second to none. What happens to her at Google will be a gauge for the wellbeing of the entire field. Watch closely.”, Moritz Hardt, Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, Berkeley University Update: Yesterday, Google Walkout for real change published a blog post on medium sharing stories of retaliation from various other Google employees. “When I reported something unethical happening at Google, Employee Relations fudged data to protect Google.” “Retaliated against for defending a mother who reports to me. HR dismissed it as “poor behavior” “I reported my tech lead to my manager for sexual harassment, but my manager thought I was ‘overreacting’ ” “My first two years at Google I was not promoted due to bias. While my peer was promoted with the same ratings and same tenure, I was not. When I asked my manager about this I was told that I was being an “emotional woman.” How is this happening at Google? Clearly this pattern should not be allowed to continue.
