“ILS” stands for “Instrument Landing System,” a modern, reliable, and essential radio-navigation aid installed at every major commercial airport in the world today. Where landings in fog, rain, or blowing snow once caused anxiety and concern for pilots and passengers alike, the ILS solves the problem of landing in bad weather by providing flight crews with an electronic precision guidance pathway down to a safe landing in any type of weather. Top and side views of the approach as well as radio frequencies and other vital criteria are shown on an “approach plate” used by the pilots, either in printed form or on digital screens in the cockpit. The three major components of the ILS are the “localizer” which indicates lateral alignment of the airplane with the runway centerline, the “glide slope” which tracks the angle and rate of descent, and three markers that signal distance to the runway threshold via an audio tone and indicator lights on the aircraft’s instrument panel. The outer marker is located approximately four miles from the runway threshold; the middle marker is approx. 3,500 feet; and the inner marker approx. 1,000 ft.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has questioned the silence of secular parties over Kerala’s beef festivals in protest against the Centre’s decision banning the sale of cattle for slaughter from open markets.“I feel there is a lot of talk in the country to respect each other’s feelings, and several organisations demand this in the name of secularism. But why are they silent on the Kerala incident?” he asked at a public felicitation function organised by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad on Sunday night. “Why are the people who staged vociferous protests over the incidents in DU and JNU silent on the issue?” the Chief Minister asked.Calf slaughteredDuring the beef festivals held in Kerala to protest against the Centre’s ban, a Youth Congress worker Rijil Makulti and his accomplices had reportedly slaughtered a calf in full public view in Kannur and took out a march with the head of a buffalo.Mr. Adityanath, soon after coming to power, had ordered strict compliance with the ban on cow slaughter in the State, besides closing down illegal slaughter houses. He had categorically stated that his government would not allow cow slaughter and cow smuggling at any cost.Kerala BJP president Kummanam Rajasekharan posted the video of the gory incident on Twitter, calling it “cruelty at it peak” and said no normal person could behave in this manner.Later, police registered a case against Mr. Makulti and his accomplices for slaughtering a calf during a ‘beef fest’ organised across the State by the Congress and the Left on Sunday to protest the Centre’s ban.
A partial lunar eclipse that was observed in New Delhi on Thursday. A total lunar eclipse as seen in Manila, Philippines. The moon’s bright white glow turned crimson brick red when it delved into the dark centre of the Earth’s shadow during the century’s longest and darkest lunar eclipse. The awesome spectacle of the moon being eclipsed was visible all over the country, including the national Capital. The full moon appeared much dimmer than usual, but sunlight passing through the Earth’s atmosphere gave the lunar surface a deep reddish hue.”This was the century’s longest and darkest total lunar eclipse as the moon immersed deeply inside the umbral (darker) shadow of the Earth,” Nehru Planetarium Director N. Rathnasree said. The total phase of the eclipse lasted 100 minutes. The last eclipse to exceed this duration was in July 2000.The next such eclipse will take place in 2141.”The penumbral lunar eclipse began at 22:54:34 IST and will end at 04:30:45 IST,” Rathnasree said. The total lunar eclipse began at 00:52:30 IST and ended at 02:32:42 IST.As the earth came in between the sun and the moon, its shadow first began sweeping across the moon blocking out much of its bright light and as the shadow descended gently, the moon’s face turned red.A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth in course of its orbit around the Sun, comes between the moon and sun in such a way that moon is hidden in the shadow cast by the Earth.”This can occur only when the sun, earth, and moon are aligned in a straight line,” C.B. Devgun from Science Popularisation Association of Communicators and Educators (SPACE) said.advertisement”People living in eastern Africa, the Middle East, central Asia and western Australia were able to watch the entire eclipse, from beginning to end,” Arvind Paranjpye, scientific officer of Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics, said.”Thursday’s eclipse is also one of the darkest due to the ashes thrown into the Earth’s atmosphere by the recent eruption of Iceland’s most active volcano, Grimsvotn,” he said. An all night lunar eclipse ‘Moon Carnival’ was celebrated by sky enthusiasts in the Capital.- With PTI inputsFor more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.

-Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has alleged that its trucks carrying relief materials for distribution among Rohingyas in Ukhia, Cox’s Bazar, was obstructed by the government.Party leaders who had come to distribute relief in Cox’s Bazar made these allegations at a press conference on Wednesday at the district BNP office. They said that 22 of their trucks carrying relief were not allowed to proceed to Ukhia.Till 11:00pm Wednesday night, the trucks remained parked by the Cox’s Bazar central Shaheed Minar in front of the district BNP office. The trucks contained rice, lentils, flattened rice (cheera), oil, salt, sugar, biscuits, water and other relief goods.Former member of parliament from Cox’s Bazar and BNP’s fisheries secretary Lutfur Rahman told Prothom Alo, they had wanted to distribute relief goods among the Rohingyas in Ukhia’s Kutupalong and Balukhali camps on Tuesday, but as the prime minister Sheikh Hasina would be visiting the Kutupalong camp, this was changed to Wednesday morning. The district administration changed this to Wednesday afternoon, on the excuse that diplomats would be inspecting the Kutupalong Rohingya camp. However, police prevented the trucks from going to Ukhia in the afternoon.Cox’s Bazar deputy commissioner Mohammed Ali Hossain told Prothom Alo, according to government rules, the DC office must first be informed of any relief to be distributed among the Rohingyas. That has been followed so long.He asked, if anyone took truckloads of relief among the thousands of Rohingyas, who would be responsible if anyone was killed in a stampede? There was no obstacle to distribute relief in keeping with the rules.Meanwhile, speaking at a press conference held at 3:00 pm in the afternoon at the Cox’s Bazar party office, BNP standing committee member Mirza Abbas said BNP wasn’t there for politics. It was there to distribute relief. It was a crime for the government to obstruct relief distribution. He said they had brought relief materials for 9000 Rohingya families in Cox’s Bazar. They had wanted to provide roof materials for shelter to 3500 families. He said, “We will never hand over our relief goods to the government. BNP will not go according to the government or DC’s orders. We will provide the relief ourselves.”BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan told the press conference, everyone should be distributing relief to the Rohingyas, but the government is preventing BNP from doing so.

The alert, which was issued on Nov. 21 and expires on Feb. 20, 2017, advises Americans to exercise caution at holiday festivals, events and outdoor markets.Credible information indicates the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL or Da’esh), al-Qa’ida, and their affiliates continue to plan terrorist attacks in Europe, with a focus on the upcoming holiday season and associated events. U.S. citizens should also be alert to the possibility that extremist sympathizers or self-radicalized extremists may conduct attacks during this period with little or no warning. Terrorists may employ a wide variety of tactics, using both conventional and non-conventional weapons and targeting both official and private interests. While extremists have carried out attacks in Belgium, France, Germany, and Turkey in the past year, the Department remains concerned about the potential for attacks throughout Europe. 08Feb LaFave: Grant helps increase access for Upper Peninsula veteran services Categories: LaFave News State Rep. Beau LaFave of Iron Mountain cosponsored legislation Wednesday encouraging counties across the state to establish and maintain veteran service offices through a new grant program.Under the measure, each county with a veteran service office that satisfies pre-approved requirements would receive $25,000, plus an additional amount based on the number of veterans in the county. To continue receiving the grant, an established county veteran service office must meet benchmarks for staff performance and reporting while maintaining the previous year’s funding level.“One of the biggest headaches for veterans is finding their local liaison to help connect them to the benefits they are seeking,” LaFave said. “Not every county in Michigan has a veteran service office. This makes access to important services difficult for veterans in those counties. If Michigan wants to be a leader in veteran services, we need to prioritize it at a local level.”Under the current veterans benefit model, the state supplies the Veteran Service Coalition with a grant to provide benefit services to veterans. Depending on the county, a Veteran Service Officer may only be available for a few hours each month at a single location.“The grant will encourage counties to establish their own veteran service office with accredited service officers,” LaFave said. “I can’t stress enough how crucial it is to have an accredited service officer present in every county to extend the reach of our services. The window of opportunity for some cases is too slim to not have a presence statewide.”The measure, House Bill 5536, now moves to the House Military and Veterans Affairs Committee for consideration.
